ONEONTA, NY – It took the Hartwick women's soccer team 85 minutes to finally crack the St. Joeseph's (LI) Golden Eagles as goals from
Casey Boucher (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) and
Allyson Daniels (Pembroke, NH/Pembroke Academy) lifted the Hawks to a 2-0 victory in the Mayor's Cup Saturday on Elmore.
The Hawks dominated play, out-shooting the Eagles 14-2 for the match, but were not rewarded until Boucher smashed in a rebound into the top corner for a 1-0 lead at the 84:29 mark. Two minutes, 15 seconds later, Daniels finished on a diving header at the back post off a service from teammate
Allie Ricci (Millstone, NJ/Saint John Vianney). It marked Ricci's third assist in the Hawks' first two games of the season.
"I'm pretty happy with how we played," said 'Wick head coach
Brian Gordon after the match. "We were slow starting against a high-pressuring team, but as the game wore on we picked up our play. We scored two very good goals and I think our hard work was rewarded."
Hartwick goalkeeper
Megan McGillycuddy (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) earned the clean sheet in goal. She was called upon to make one save in the contest.
The Hawks (2-0) enter tomorrow's match with Delaware Valley with a shot at their first Mayor's Cup title. They trail Oneonta on goal differential after the Red Dragons used three second-half goals to defeat the DVU Aggies, 3-0.
Kickoff between the Hawks and Aggies tomorrow is 2:30 p.m. at Wright Soccer Complex.
