Emily Stone (Granby, CT/Granby Memorial) erupted for a career-high 26 points to lead Hartwick's women's basketball team to a 73-57 victory over visiting Alfred University (1-13, 0-5 E8) on Friday night at Lambros Arena. The Hawks are now 5-7 overall and 3-1 in the Empire 8.
Stone made nine of her 10 shots from the floor, and hit a career-high five three-pointers in the game. She also had three assists.
Jacqui Foreman (Tolland, CT/Tolland) added a double-double of 14 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. She now has 37 boards in the Hawks' last two games. Foreman contributed three assists, two steals, and a blocked shot.
Taylor Vonasek (Willington, CT/E.O. Smith) recorded 17 points and six rebounds.
The Hawks fell behind 8-0 in the game and trailed by a margin of 12-7 with 3:35 remaining in the opening quarter. 'Wick would then hold the Saxons scoreless for the next 9:19 of action. The Hawks ended the first period on a 12-0 run for a 19-12 lead. A 7-0 spurt to start the second quarter gave the hosts a 26-12 advantage 4:16 before halftime. They would take a 33-19 lead into halftime.
Hartwick maintained its sizeable lead for much of the third quarter before the Saxons trimmed the gap to just five points, 46-41, with under a minute left. Alfred kept its deficit to under double digits for the first four minutes of the final quarter until a Stone free throw made it 56-46 'Wick. AU cut the margin to 10 again with just over three minutes to play, but the Hawks ended the game on a 9-3 run to close out the victory.
'Wick shot a season-high 48% from the floor and made a season-best seven three-pointers in the contest. The Hawks won the rebounding battle, 38-32, and out-scored the Saxons in the paint, 40-18.
Christina Graziadei (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) contributed six rebounds, three assists, and three blocks in the game for Hartwick.
Jessica Bellai (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) added four points, three assists, and one steal.
Amanda Off led three Alfred players in double digits with 19 points. McKaylee Croll netted 13 and Sarah Kichman added 12.
The Hawks are back in action tomorrow at home against Elmira College. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
