ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick swimming and diving teams swept squads from St. Lawrence on Saturday at Moyer Pool at the annual Senior Recognition/Parent Appreciation Meet. The Hartwick men won all 14 swimming events to earn a 183-95 victory over the Saints. The women's team won 10 events on its way to a 189-95 victory.
The men's team took first, second, and third in six races and went 1-2 in seven of the remaining eight swims. Seniors
Ben Detar (Charleston, SC/Hanahan) and
Matt Plunkett (Cooper City, FL/Cooper City) each won a pair of races in their final home meet.
Brendan Quinn (Raleigh, NC/Heritage) and
Joe Mulvehill (Penfield, NY/Penfield) also won two events apiece.
Chris Farrell (Charlotte, NC/Rocky River),
Aron Zhang (Douglaston, NY/Brooklyn Technical),
Joey Moffitt (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock) and
Zane Grunewald (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) each earned individual victories for the Hawks.
Detar, Quinn and Farrell finished 1-2-3 in the 200 fly event. Detar's winning time was 1:57.95. He also placed first in the 500 freestyle (4:52.81).
Brian Edmister III (Belmont, NY/Genesee Valley Central) was second and
Christian Burns (East Pembroke, NY/Pembroke) was third.
Plunkett won both backstroke events. He took the 100 in 53.54. He edged out Grunewald (55.69) who finished second. Plunkett and Grunewald went 1-2 in the 200 event. Plunkett's time was 1:53.68. Grunewald would also finish in the top spot in the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.75.
Quinn was first in the 200 free (1:50.10) and the 100 fly (55.62).
Brendan Day (Westfield, MA/Westfield) was second with Edmister finishing third in the 200 free. Detar finished runner-up to Quinn in the 100 fly.
Mulvehill won the sprint events, taking the 50 free in 21.68 and the 100 free in 47.52.
David Mauro (Queensbury, NY/Glens Falls) was second in both events with Day grabbing third in the 100.
Farrell secured his win in the 1000 freestyle event. His time was 10:38.14. He was followed in second place by Burns.
Zhang won the 100 breast in 1:01.63. Moffitt was in second and senior
Matteo Merodio (Kelseyville, CA/Kelseyville) was third. Moffitt (2:17.19) and Merodio ended up 1-2 in the 200 breaststroke.
Plunkett, Zhang, Detar, and Mulvehill combined to win the 200 medley relay in 1:37.76. Hawk teams took first, second, and third in the race. Grunewald, Moffitt, Mauro, and Edmister placed second. Burns, Merodio,
Asher Mendez (Dallas, TX/JJ Pearce), and
Nick Gess (Mequon, WI/Homestead) were third.
Mulvehill, Edmister, Plunkett, and Zhang also won the 200 free relay (1:37.11). Day, Quinn,
Robert Marvald (Richester, NY/Brighton), and Mauro took second.
Imma Rutigliano (Tilson, NY/John A. Coleman), who was competing in her final home meet, racked up another three wins to add to her season total. Senior
Hanna Prendeville (Diamond Point, NY/Warrensburg) also recorded a win. Senior
Meghan Barry (White Plains, NY/White Plains) won both diving events with
Morgan Riggins (Austin, TX/Dripping Springs) and
Maddy Hayes (Eagan, MN/Eagan) each winning one race.
Rutigliano edged out
Rachel Bellis (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) in the 200 freestyle for her first win of the day. Rutigliano's time was 2:01.73. She was also first in the 200 back (2:15.63) and the 200 IM.
Helen Merkley (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) was second in the 200 back and Prendeville and Riggins were second and third, respectively, in the 200 IM.
Prendeville's win came in the 200 breast. She earned a time of 2:37.33 and was followed by Riggins in second and
Natalie Athans (Victor, NY/Victor) in third. Riggins won the 100 breast (1:12.64) with Prendeville taking second and Athans third.
Barry was first in 1-meter diving with a score of 138.00. She edged out
Steph Sacco (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) who earned a score of 136.70. The pair went 1-2 in the 3-meter as well.
Hayes was the winner of the 200 fly in 2:26.64.
Lauren Cooley (Snohomish, WA/Glacier Peak) was second.
Hartwick teams finished first, second, and third in the 200 medley relay. Rutigliano, Riggins, Hayes, and
Bree Jefferds (Watertown, NY/Watertown) won the event in 1:56.74. Merkley, Athans, Cooley, and Prendeville teamed up for second and
Meghan Maloney (Staten Island, NY/Fontbonne Hall Academy),
Brianna Valente (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont),
Sarah Aiello (Ronkonkoma, NY/Connetquot), and
Katherine Sanchez (East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) were third.
Jefferds, Hayes, Elliott, and Bellis won the 200 free relay in 1:45.26 to wrap up the day.
Prior to today's meet, Detar, Plunkett, Day, Marvald, Merodio, Rutigliano, Prendeville, Barry, and Merkley were recognized for their contributions to the men's and women's swimming and diving teams.
The men's team (12-2) and women's team (7-7) wrap up the dual meet season next Saturday at Stevens Institute of Technology.
