Joey Lufkin (Argyle, NY/Argyle Central) was at it again Saturday as he dropped in a game-high 27 points to lead the Hawks to a 96-72 blowout of Stevens at Lambros Arena. Lufkin reached the 1,000 point mark for his career at 'Wick, become only the 31
st player in program history to do so.
The Hawks came out strong, hitting 52.6% from the floor with eight three-pointers for a 48-29 lead at halftime. 'Wick made half of its attempts in the second half and dominated the Ducks on the glass for the game, 55-27, for the Empire 8 win. The Hawks are now 2-0 in league play and 7-4 overall.
Lufkin hit the 1,000-mark with 12:35 left in the second half. Needing only a point, he was fouled on a three-point attempt and hit his first from the line for the milestone. For the game, Lufkin made 7-of-15 from the floor and made four threes. He also tied for a game-high with four assists.
Lufkin led five Hawks in double figures.
Trevor Norton (Mullica Hill, NJ/Ursinus College) missed a double-double by one rebound with 20 points and nine boards. He added four treys and three assists.
Jake Sinicki (Endicott, NY/Maine Endwell) added 14 points and five rebounds for 'Wick.
Matt Wilson (Shelton, CT/Franklin & Marshall College) contributed a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 12 boards.
Justin Pratt (North Kingstown, RI/North Kingstown) chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds.
There were three lead changes and four tie scores in the opening six minutes of the game until a Lufkin three would put Hartwick in front to stay, 14-11, with 14:14 showing on the first-half clock. Following a Norton triple with 8:20 left in the half, the Hawks lead grew to 12 and they never led by less than double digits again. Sixteen points was the closest the Ducks would get for the remainder of the contest.
The Hawks finished with 11 three-pointers and made 51.5% (34-for-66) of their shots from the floor. They grabbed 17 offensive rebounds which they turned into 28 second-chance points.
Ryan Coffey was the high scorer for Stevens with 19 points. He tied for a team-high with six rebounds. Evan Klimchak was also in double figures with 17 points. The Ducks were held to 39.7% shooting on the night. They connected o just 4-of-25 from three-point range.
Hartwick next plays on Tuesday, January 12 at Utica College. Game time is 6 p.m.
