HOUGHTON, NY - The Hartwick field hockey team snapped a three-game skid achieving a 3-2 defeat over conference opponent, Houghton, on Saturday afternoon. At Burke Field,
Maria Stalder (New Woodstock, NY/Cazenovia),
Sarah Ryan (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) and
Emily Marcotte (Corinth, NY/Corinth) each contributed to the Hawk's point total as they now elevate their season record to 7-3 (2-2 E8). Houghton falls to 5-4 (1-3 E8).
'Wick jumped out to a quick lead only 28 seconds into the match. Stalder began the scoring for the Hawks while also notching her first goal of the season. Ryan tallied the assist. At 4:45, Houghton combated its early deficit with a goal of its own to the credit of Nicole Jennings on a read from Casidhe Heschke.
In response to a 1-1 deadlocked score, the Hawks rattled off another goal at 57:46. Ryan registered the successful shot off an initial penalty corner opportunity from
Mikaelan Stuligross (Walton, NY/Walton).
With only two minutes remaining in regulation, the Highlanders forced the extra time as they managed to knot the score again. Though Marissa Hollinger took the corner, she rebounded the ball on a feed from Kelsie Ashley and netted the goal.
Hartwick had to now compete in its first overtime this season.
Two overtime periods were played between the Hawks and Highlanders. Marcotte concluded the match in 'Wick's favor after netting a shot from the help of
Lex Richards (Northport, NY/Northport) in the 98
th minute.
The Hawks outshot the Highlanders 22-16. Keeper
Shannon Carter (Falls Church, VA/J.E.B. Stuart) rejected nine of them while the opposing goalie, Elizabeth Piszker, stopped 11.
The Hawks battle non-conference opponent, Union College, on October 4
th at home before a two-game conference stretch.
