ONEONTA, NY – Scoring twice in less than a minute-span, freshman
Maria Stalder (New Woodstock, NY/Cazenovia) powered the host Hartwick field hockey team, 2-0, over non-conference opponent, Union, on Tuesday afternoon at Wright Stadium. The freshman netted two of her four shots to secure Hartwick with the win. Now, having won their last two games, the Hawks improve to 8-3 overall. The loss drops Union to 3-7.
Stalder's second goal in a Hartwick uniform occurred at 42:20. Using a
Sarah Ryan (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) penalty corner, the team's eighth, she ultimately would connect for the goal to reward the Hawks the 1-0 advantage.
Within a minute later, Ryan drove along the end line and dished the ball to Stalder. Through several defenders, Stalder fired a shot that was blocked. She rebounded the initial miss and this time, the ball found back of the net.
The Dutchwomen outshot the Hawks, 15-13 with Hannah Christian in their forefront with four. The Hawks would tally more penalty corners, 20-7.
Senior keeper,
Shannon Carter (Falls Church, VA/J.E.B. Stuart) added nine saves to her resume. Opposing goalie, Laura Aptowitz stopped six and gets the loss.
Hartwick will see three Empire 8 members in its next four contests. The Hawks visit Elmira on Saturday, October 15 at 1 p.m.
