Hartwick Battles Back to Claim 2-1 Victory over Oswego

OSWEGO, NY - The Hartwick field hockey team participated in non-conference action with a 2-1 win at Oswego on Wednesday afternoon. Playing at Laker Turf Stadium, senior Courtney Coons (Wilton, NY/South Glens Falls) had a hand in both Hawks' goals as they improve to 11-3 overall and drop the Lakers to 7-4. The win marks the fifth straight victory for Hartwick.

Out of the gate, Hartwick imposed its pressure early earning two penalty corners within the first two minutes. Senior Mikaelan Stuligross (Walton, NY/Walton) attempted both seeing her second corner lead to the first shot attempt of the game by junior Lex Richards (Northport, NY/Northport).

Despite the early control, the home team opened the scoring. At 24:39, Lacey Woited tallied her sixth goal of the season finding teammate Corinne Kimmelman whose pass cut across the arc into her possession. Woite's shot coasted past senior keeper, Shannon Carter (Falls Church, VA/J.E.B. Stuart), to put the first lead in their favor, 1-0.

The Hawks received five additional corners and rattled off three more shots to close out the first stanza.

Early in the second half, the Hawks jumped all over the Lakers again claiming eight quick corners and three shots.  On the eighth corner in the 50th minute, freshman Maria Stalder (New Woodstock, NY/Cazenovia) got hold of the ball before it ricocheted off goalie Sara Charap. Coons locked in on the rebound and found the back of the cage to stabilize things, 1-1.  Stalder was credited with the assist.

Less than three minutes went by before freshman Allyson Quirk (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) scored what would prove to be the game-winner. At 53:26, Coons dished a pass to the left post to see the freshman net the goal through a crowd.

Oswego's Kendra Walker attempted a shot with just under four minutes to go in regulation. It was wide left.

Quirk and Coons each registered their third goals of the season while senior Rebecca Reilly (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead) (2), senior Jen Spagnuolo (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park), Richards, senior Sarah Ryan (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) and freshman Kelsey Chubb (Clarence, NY/Clarence Central) attempted shots.

Carter denied two shots and Charap stopped five in the match. Hartwick tabbed 19 corners to Oswego's four.

The Hawks, who are tied for third in the Empire 8 see conference member Stevens in Hoboken, NJ on October 22nd. Start time is set for 3 p.m.
