HOBOKEN, NJ – Hartwick's field hockey team was presented an opportunity to clinch its first post-season berth since 2009 on Saturday and it cashed in with a 2-1 come from behind victory over Stevens at De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, NJ.
The Hawks are now tied for second in the standings with the Ducks at 5-2 with one game remaining. Even with a Hawks' loss, they would have advantages in tie-breakers to claim a spot in the tournament.
After going down one, the Hawks used two-second half tallies for the victory. The Hawks are now 12-3 overall and 5-2 in conference. The Ducks fall to 9-7 (5-2 E8). The victory also extends Hartwick's current winning streak to six.
In the 14
th minute, Nolie Prouty got the home team on the board first, 1-0. Prior to the goal, she attempted two earlier shots seeing her first sail high and second rejected by goalie
Shannon Carter (Falls Church, VA/J.E.B. Stuart). Her third try on the afternoon came on a read from reserve Katti Thomasian who worked a penalty corner in her direction.
For the remainder of the half, both teams were even in corners with four apiece and nearly identical in shots with Stevens firing off four to 'Wick's three. The score stood heading into the break.
In the second segment, Stevens upped its offensive pressure being given two penalty corners and attempting two shots in the first two minutes. Despite the early control, Hartwick would log the next point goal from
Emily Marcotte (Corinth, NY/Corinth). She rebounded the ball in the midst of the scrum and throttled it past the goalie to balance the score, one-up.
Hartwick would go on to outshoot their opponent 6-1 and edge them in corners, 4-1 until the next scoring play.
At 68:11,
Bella Wheeler (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) finished the scoring at De Baun when the freshman got a touch on the ball and knocked it in through a pool of defenders to ultimately give the Hawks the game, 2-1.
Carter ended with four saves seeing all 70 minutes in goal. Emily Stukenborg stopped seven for Stevens.
The Hawks round out their regular season at home. First, they take on their last non-conference opponent, Wells, on October 26
th at 4 p.m. Hartwick then battles E8 member, St. John Fisher, on October 29
th and 2 p.m. for its Senior Day.
