PITTSFORD, NY – Hartwick stayed unbeaten in its last four matches (2-0-2) on Saturday with a 1-1 tie at St. John Fisher. The Hawks fell behind in the 50
th minute but responded with the tying goal in the 63
rd. The Hawks are now 6-3-2 overall and 1-1-2 in Empire 8 Conference play.
Fisher (2-6-2, 1-2-1 E8) nearly broke the ice early in the contest as Carly Finn hit the post with her shot after 11:42 of action. The Cardinals would get shots on frame that required saves from Hartwick goalkeeper
Megan McGillycuddy (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) later in the half.
Rachel Pine (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls) would register the lone Hartwick shot on target in the opening 45 minutes. Her header, however, was saved by Fisher's Gabriella Cotugno.
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard 4:05 into the second half. A cross from Tara Marcello was finished off by Finn for a 1-0 advantage for the hosts.
Hartwick needed 13:01 to even the score on its first opportunity of the half. A through ball from
Sierra Bentley (Worcester, NY/Schenevus) was gathered by
Casey Boucher (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge), who made a move past a Cardinal defender at the top of the box, and passed the ball by Cotugno to tie the match. It marked Boucher's third tally of the season and Bentley's seventh assist.
In the final 28 minutes of the second half, Fisher out-shot the Hawks by a 4-2 margin. Only Taryn Guinta's effort in the 78
th minute made it on goal with McGillycuddy making the save.
The first overtime produced a shot for each team. Boucher had Hartwick's, a 20-yard shot which went just over the Cardinal crossbar. Fisher had the only shot of the second extra stanza with seconds remaining, but it was over the bar.
Fisher finished the game with a slim advanatage in shots, 12-10. Hartwick had all four corners in the match.
McGillycuddy finished the day with four saves for the Hawks. Cotugno made two stops in the Cardinal goal.
Bentley's assist gave her 17 in her three-year career at 'Wick. As a result, she pulled into a fourth-place tie in the program record book for career assists. The junior is just four shy of tying the all-time mark.
Hartwick heads across the street for a Sunday matchup with Nazareth College. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
