ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick held an early 2-1 lead on visiting Clarkson but the Golden Knights used a 7-0 run in the second and third quarters to help pull away in a 14-6 win over the Hawks Saturday in the season opener for both teams.
Jake Sachse (Lutherville, MD/Boys' Latin School of MD) and
Cody Petillo (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) each registered a pair of goals for Hartwick.
Chris Vaden (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) added a goal and one helper.
Petillo put the Hawks in front 1:35 into the contest as he scored off a feed from
Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin). The Golden Knights answered less than four minutes later on a Ryan DaRin tally.
The Hawks jumped back in front 5:20 after Clarkson tied it. Sachse found the net, beating Golden Knight goalkeeper Nick Strandholm for a 2-1 advantage. Scott Dosser tied the game with 1:40 left in the period and the two teams entered the second quarter even at 2-all.
Clarkson scored three times in the second quarter, with two coming from Ryan St. Croix, and the Golden Knights hit halftime up by a 5-2 margin.
Four goals in a 3:27 span early in the third quarter would increase the Golden Knights' margin to seven, 9-2.
Chris VanDemark (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post) and Sachse scored for Hartwick in the final four minutes of the period but the visitors took a 12-4 edge into the final quarter.
Vaden opened the scoring in the fourth at 9:03 from an assist from
Matt McCallan (Bay Shore, NY/West Islip). Clarkson would tack on two more goals before Petillo closed out the scoring with 1:21 left in the match.
Clarkson out-shot the Hawks by a margin of 37-28 in the contest. The Golden Knights had a 39-30 advantage in ground balls and they won 14-of-23 face-offs.
Vaden and
Garrison Wojtas (Hauppage, NY/Hauppage) led Hartwick with five ground balls apiece.
Derek Chandler (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa),
Kyle Kickel (West Islip, NY/West Islip), and
James Vogt (Stratham, NH/Exeter) each had three.
Mike Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) made eight saves in goal. Strandholm stopped 12 shots for Clarkson. Peter Hargrave played the final 3:02 and made on save.
Hartwick returns to action on Saturday, March 5 at home against SUNY Canton at 12 p.m.
