ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick answered a four-goal Canton spurt with 12 consecutive goals over the final 32:56 to earn its first victory of the season Saturday in a 16-4 romp over SUNY Canton.
Matt McCallan (Bay Shore, NY/West Islip),
Chris Vaden (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point),
Cody Petillo (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North), and
Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) combined for 14 goals and four assists in the contest for the Hawks.
Hartwick started the game with a goal 29 seconds in from McCallan on a
Conner Long (Hardwick, NJ/Blair Academy) feed to take an early 1-0 lead. The Hawks were forced to wait over 10 minutes for their next tally which started a three-goal run in a 1:31 span.
Jake Sachse (Lutherville, MD/Boys' Latin School of MD), Ferguson, and McCallan each found the net in the rally to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead after one period.
Canton would net four straight goals in the first 7:40 of the second quarter to knot the score at 4-4. Vaden answered to put the Hawks up to stay at 2:56. McCallan and Ferguson scored in the final 1:58 and 'Wick took a 7-4 advantage into halftime.
The Hawks scored three more times in the third quarter with Vaden, McCallan, and Petillo scoring. Five more tallies in the opening 6:47 of the fourth would give the Hawks a 15-4 lead. Vaden and Petillo each registered a pair of goals in the span with
Chris VanDemark (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post) also tallying. McCallan put the finishing touches on the victory with his game-high fifth goal of the game with 1:25 remaining in the contest.
Vaden finished with four goals and an assist. Petillo had three goals and an assist and Ferguson recorded two goals and two helpers. Long and
Cordell Armstrong (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) each dished out two assists. Sachse also recorded an assist to go along with his goal.
The Hawks out-shot the Kangaroos by a 55-25 margin. They also had the advantage in ground balls, 41-30.
Garrison Wojtas (Hauppage, NY/Hauppage) led the Hawks with six ground balls. He also contributed two caused turnovers.
Kevin Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) added four ground balls and a team-high four caused turnovers. Sachse also caused four Canton miscues. Vaden and Ferguson also had four ground balls for 'Wick.
Mike Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) made nine saves in 53 minutes in cage for the Hawks.
Connor O'Brien (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) stopped two shots in the final 6:44.
Hartwick plays next Saturday in its first road game of the season at Farmingdale State beginning at 12 p.m.
