SCRANTON, PA – Hartwick trailed by a count of 9-7 near the midway point of the second half, but out-scored the Marywood Pacers 4-0 the rest of the way to secure an 11-9 victory Monday in Scranton. The game was the season opener for the Hawks. The Pacers fall to 0-2 on the season.
The Hawks needed just three and a half minutes to turn their two-goal deficit into a one-goal lead. Freshman
Emma Knapp (Canandaigua, NY/Walt Whitman) scored with 10:31 left in the game to put 'Wick up for good.
Courtney Coons (Wilton, NY/South Glens Falls) pushed the lead to two with six minutes to go and freshman goalkeeper
Carleigh Tarala (Tully, NY/Tully) stopped four Pacer shots in the final 3:14 to preserve the win.
Lauren Rosenberg (Smithtown, NY/Commack) led Hartwick with four goals and an assist.
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) added two goals and an assist, and Coons finished with a goal and two helpers.
The first half featured five tie scores and a pair of lead changes with neither team leading by more than one goal until the final minute.
Megan Young (Gansevoort, NY/Schuylerville) gave the Hawks their first advantage, 3-2, with 17:22 left in the half. Werner also gave 'Wick leads with both of her goals. Marywood, however, would rally for three scores in the last 5:34 of the period to grab a 7-5 lead at the intermission.
Goals from Rosenberg brought the Hawks within a goal twice in the opening 15 minutes of the second half.
Abby Letourneau (South Portland, ME/South Portland) made it 9-8 at 14:04 and
Jessie Matt (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) tied the score at 9-9 fifty-one seconds later. Knapp got the game-winner with 10:31 remaining before Coons topped off the scoring.
The Hawks had a 28-24 advantage in shots. The Pacers had more ground balls, 29-27. The two teams each registered 11 draw controls
Tarala would end the contest with eight saves in her first collegiate game. Rosenberg registered a game-high five draws and she tied for a game-high with four ground balls. Werner had four ground balls and three draws. Matt also recorded four ground balls. She had a team-high three caused turnovers.
Marywood was led by Caitlin Watson's three goals and an assist. Ashley Valway added two tallies and two assists, and Sam Bussinelli chipped in with a goal and three helpers.
Hartwick next plays on Wednesday. The Hawks travel to Skidmore College for a 6 p.m. game.
