Men’s Lax Earns 7-6 Overtime Win Over UMass Boston

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick let a 6-2 fourth-quarter lead slip away, but Cody Petillo (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) scored 37 seconds into overtime to propel the Hawks to a 7-6 victory over visiting UMass Boston on Saturday at Wright Stadium. The win is the Hawks' second of the season as they improve to 2-3. The Beacons fall to 6-2 with the loss.

Petillo tallied on 'Wick's second shot of the overtime as he slipped in front of Beacon goalie Craig Frehill and beat him for his eighth goal of the year for the clincher.

Hartwick would hold a 37-27 edge in shots on the day, which included a 21-9 advantage in the first half alone.

UMB broke the ice at 10:53 of the opening quarter before Jake Sachse (Lutherville, MD/Boys' Latin School of MD) answered for 'Wick 2:52 later for his first of two goals on the day. The Beacons would grab the lead at the four-minute mark and they took a 2-1 lead into the second quarter.

Pat Robinson (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) would net his first goal of the season 10:06 into the second period to knot the score at two and the teams were deadlocked at halftime.

In the third, a pair of man-down tallies 29 seconds apart from Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) and Cordell Armstrong (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) would give the Hawks a 4-2 lead. Sasche and Petillo added to the total with goals later in the quarter and the Hawks held a 6-2 edge heading into the fourth period.

The Beacons slowly fought their way back into the game scoring at 13:14, 9:49, and 6:13 to pull within a single goal. They added the tying score with 3:20 left in regulation. Both teams had one more shot on cage with the goalkeepers making stops to force the extra session before Petillo ended the contest.

Matt McCallan (Bay Shore, NY/West Islip), who earned an assist on the day, grabbed a team-high of four ground balls for the Hawks. Ferguson, Mike Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach), Kevin Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach), and Sasche accumulated three ground balls apiece.

Kevin Rourke and Garrison Wojtas (Hauppage, NY/Hauppage) each caused three Beacon turnovers. Mike Rourke stopped eight shots in the Hawks' goal.

The Hawks are back in action next Saturday in their Empire 8 Conference opener against St. John Fisher. Game time is 2 p.m.
