ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick led at halftime, but a big third quarter helped propel visiting St. John Fisher past the Hawks on Saturday at Wright Stadium, 10-7. The Cardinals out-scored 'Wick 5-0 in the quarter to take a 9-5 advantage into the final period. Hartwick scored twice to open the fourth quarter but could get no closer.
The loss drops to Hawks to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the E8. Fisher improves to 4-3, and 1-0.
After Fisher took an early lead,
Cody Petillo (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North),
Conner Long (Hardwick, NJ/Blair Academy), and
Matt McCallan (Bay Shore, NY/West Islip) netted consecutive goals in a 4:07 to put the Hawks ahead 3-1.
Fisher evened the score with goals in the second quarter, but
Chris Vaden (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) countered with two straight tallies to give the Hawks a 5-3 advantage. The Cardinals got one back later in the second quarter and the Hawks would lead 5-4 after 30 minutes.
In the third quarter, The Cardinals would only out-shoot the Hawks 7-6, but they managed to score on five of their shots and opened up a 9-5 lead.
Vaden scored his third of the day at 11:45 and
Jake Sachse (Lutherville, MD/Boys' Latin School of MD) added a goal 2:57 later as the Hawks drew within two, 9-7. The Cardinals registered the final tally of the day at the 7:10 mark.
Hartwick held a 35-33 edge in shots in the game. The Cardinals won the ground ball battle, 38-28 and won 13 of 20 face-offs.
McCallan, Sachse, and
Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) recorded assists for the Hawks in the game.
Connor O'Brien (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) made nine saves in the Hawks' cage in his first collegiate start.
Mike Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) made two saves in the final period.
James Vogt (Stratham, NH/Exeter) led Hartwick with five ground balls. O'Brien,
Garrison Wojtas (Hauppage, NY/Hauppage), and
David Bianculli (Charlton, MA/Shepard Hill Regional) each had three.
Kevin Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) forced three caused turnovers for 'Wick. Wojtas would contribute two.
Fisher was led by a three-goal effort from Drew Brown. Kevin O'Donnell grabbed a game-high nine ground balls and he won all 13 of the Cardinals' face-offs.
Hartwick next plays on Wednesday against SUNY Oneonta at Wright Stadium. The opening face-off is slated for 3 p.m.
