Jessie Matt (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) fired in a career-high seven goals and
Lauren Rosenberg (Smithtown, NY/Commack) netted her 100
th career goal
on Wednesday evening as Hartwick's women's lacrosse team defeated visiting Keuka 16-9 at Wright Stadium. The Hawks built a 6-1 advantage and never led by less than four the rest of the way in the victory. 'Wick evens up its record at 3-3. The Wolfpack drops to 2-3.
Emma Knapp (Canandaigua, NY/Marcus Whitman) and Matt would get Hartwick's first two goals in the opening five minutes to put the Hawks up by a 2-0 margin. Keuka gained one back, but the Hawks went on a 4-0 run for a 6-1 advantage. Matt accounted for two of the goals with Rosenberg
and
Megan Young (Gansevoort, NY/Schuylerville) also tallying.
Courtney Coons (Wilton, NY/South Glens Falls) would register the Hawks' final goal of the half and they entered the intermission up 7-3.
Matt recorded another two goals with
Abby Letourneau (South Portland, ME/South Portland) adding a free-position goal to increase the lead to 10-3 early in the second half.
The two teams would trade goals before the Wolfpack got back in the game with three straight scores. The Hawks answered with three of their own in a 2:58 span. Knapp, Letourneau, and Matt would find the net in the run.
After Keuka scored at the 6:36 mark to make it 14-8, Coons and Rosenberg scored within 56 seconds of one another to put the game away. Rosenberg's tally put her over the 100-goal mark in her three seasons at Hartwick. The Wolfpack got the final goal with less than two minutes left for the final 16-9 score line.
Hartwick finished the contest with advantages in shots (26-19) and ground balls (22-21). Keuka held a 14-13 edge in draw controls.
Coons would contribute a game-high three assists for 'Wick. She also tied with Young for a team-high five ground balls.
Mel Niewender (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park Memorial) contributed three.
Letourneau and
Hazel Flores (Brentwood, NY/Brentwood) each had three draws to lead the Hawks. Coons, Rosenberg, Letourneau, and goalie
Carleigh Tarala (Tully, NY/Tully) each caused two turnovers. Tarala also made two saves in cage.
The Hawks open up Empire 8 play on Saturday at Nazareth. Game time is 1 p.m.
