ALFRED, NY – Hartwick College was defeated by Alfred University 11-5 in men's lacrosse Saturday in Alfred, NY.
Chris Vaden (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) and
Cody Petillo (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) combined to score all five goals for the Hawks, who fall to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the Empire 8.
After a scoreless first quarter, Petillo scored a goal from
Conner Long (Hardwick, NJ/Blair Academy) 5:29 into the second quarter and Hartwick led 1-0.
Alfred quickly erased the deficit as it scored three times in a 56-second span to grab a 3-1 lead. The Saxons added a fourth with 2:28 left and they took a 4-1 lead into halftime.
Both teams scored twice in the third period. Petillo netted his twelfth goal of the year and Vaden scored his fourteenth with
Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) assisting. Alfred would score both of its third-quarter goals seven seconds apart.
In the final period, the two teams traded goals over the first 7:13. The Saxons got the game's final two tallies at 6:08 and 3:16 to score the victory.
Mike Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) finished the game with 18 saves in the Hawks' cage. He also grabbed three ground balls. His brother,
Kevin Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach), had team-highs of four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
James Vogt (Stratham, NH/Exeter) also registered four ground balls.
David Bianculli (Charlton, MA/Shepard Hill Regional) contributed three.
Alfred received three goals and three assists from John Winchell. Jake Lynch scored three times and Joe Fornataro added two goals and two tallies.
Hartwick plays one week from today at home against Elmira. The opening face-off is slated for 1 p.m.
