Young Nets Overtime Winner as Hartwick Women’s Lax Defeats Elmira 11-10

ELMIRA, NYMegan Young (Gansevoort, NY/Schuylerville) scored 1:47 into overtime to lift Hartwick to an 11-10 win over Elmira College in Empire 8 women's lacrosse on Monday at Campus Field. The game was rescheduled from April 9 when inclement weather forced a postponement of the matchup between the Hawks and Soaring Eagles.

With the victory, Hartwick improves to 5-9 overall and 2-5 in the Empire 8. Elmira falls to 5-8 and 2-5.

Tonight's result marks the second straight overtime game played between the two sides. The Hawks came away with a 14-11 win in overtime last year.

Lauren Rosenberg (Smithtown, NY/Commack) finished with five goals for the Hawks. Young and Jessie Matt (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) each scored a pair of goals.

The Soaring Eagles would out-shoot Hartwick 36-27, but Hawk keeper Carleigh Tarala (Tully, NY/Tully) made a College-high 16 saves in the contest.

Hartwick would take control in the first half after falling behind early, 2-1, thanks to four consecutive goals in a 3:49 span. Rosenberg scored 'Wick's first goal at 27:02. Matt, Emma Knapp (Canandaigua, NY/Marcus Whitman), Abby Letourneau (South Portland, ME/South Portland), and Rosenberg then scored within four minutes of one another and Hartwick grabbed a 5-2 edge with 18:08 remaining in the first half.

EC answered with three straight tallies to tie the score at five. The two teams traded goals over the last 1:13 of the half for a 6-6 tie at halftime. Rosenberg closed the half with three goals.

The game remained tied for the first 12:20 of the second half before EC took the lead. Young scored at the 16:32 mark, but two straight Soaring Eagle goals put the hosts up 9-7 with under 15 minutes to play in the game.

'Wick drew within one on Matt's second goal of the evening at 12:37. The game remained 9-8 Elmira's favor until 4:16 when Rosenberg beat EC keeper Payton Rusin for her fourth score of the contest. She put the Hawks in front 46 seconds later and they were 3:30 away from the win.

Hartwick nearly got the victory in regulation but it allowed Moorea Spoljaric just enough time to net her fifth goal of the game and fifty-eighth of the year with three ticks left.

Elmira won the opening draw in overtime but turned the ball over before getting a crack at the game-winner. The Hawks cleared and Matt got the ball to Young in front of the EC cage. With her back to the goal, she turned and slipped a left-handed shot low past Rusin for the clincher.

The Soaring Eagles would hold a slim advantage in ground balls in the game, 31-27. They also had 15 of the game's 22 draw controls.

Elmira would convert only 4-of-18 free-position shots on the evening. Tarala would make saves on 10 of them, five in each half. She also recorded a team-high seven ground balls.

Emma Kaplan (Danbury, CT/Danbury) had four ground balls and Mattie Coffey (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) added three. Rosenberg, Young, Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties), and Caitlin Hawley (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) each registered two.

Courtney Coons (Wilton, NY/South Glens Falls) would register assists on two of Rosenberg's goals. She now has a team-best twenty-nine assists on the year. She ranks second in the league in the category and is tied for second in Hartwick history in single-season assists. Rosenberg, with her goal to put the Hawks up 10-9 late in the contest, reached the 150-point mark for her career (123g, 27a).

Hartwick will wrap up its season on Saturday, April 30 against Houghton. Game time is 3 p.m. at Wright Stadium.
