ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick women's soccer was beaten by visiting Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute by a 1-0 final score on Wednesday night under the lights of Elmore. Cori Winslow netted the game's only goal in the 22
nd minute for the Engineers.
RPI (5-1), which entered the game ranked fifth in the latest NSCAA East Region poll, earned a clean sheet for the fifth time this season. They have only allowed one goal all season which came in a 1-0 loss to defending national champion and top-ranked Williams.
The Hawks fall by a count of 1-0 for their second straight match after dropping a result by the same count to nationally seventh-ranked Stevens on Saturday. They are now 4-3 on the season.
The game's lone goal came at the 21:21 mark. RPI's Stephanie May drew a defender in the box and laid the ball off to Winslow at the penalty spot with an open look at goal. Winslow's shot took a deflection off a Hartwick defender but found the net for a 1-0 Engineer lead. It would mark Winslow's first goal of the year.
Winslow nearly added to her team's total on a header four minutes later but a diving stop from Hartwick keeper
Megan McGillycuddy (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) kept it a one-goal game.
McGillycuddy would register another three saves in the second half as the game remained one-zero for the duration. The Engineer defense kept the Hawks from generating many chances for the tying goal.
The visitors would hold an 18-2 edge in shots for the match.
Jacqueline Smith (Monroe, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) and
Maddy Paul (Seattle, WA/Nathan Hale) would register the Hawks' shots.
Another regionally ranked opponent awaits the Hawks in their next match on Saturday. 'Wick gets back to Empire 8 Conference play against the Ithaca Bombers on the road with kickoff slated for 12 p.m.
