ITHACA, NY – Hartwick held a 2-0 lead on host Ithaca before the Bombers evened the match later in the half in a 2-2 tie on Carp Wood Field in Ithaca, NY on Saturday afternoon. With the result, the Hawks are now 4-3-1 and 0-1-1 in the Empire 8. The Bombers are now 4-1-2 and 0-0-1.
The result for the Hawks snaps a 28-game losing streak to the Bombers dating back to the 1989 season when the squads drew 0-0. Hartwick has now played three straight opponents who are ranked in the East Region in Stevens (#2), RPI (#5), and Ithaca (#6).
After over 57 minutes of scoreless action,
Madison Miller (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) headed in a
Sierra Bentley (Worcester, NY/Schenevus) corner kick, giving Hartwick a 1-0 advantage. The total grew to two just 2:52 later as
Casey Boucher (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) sent a shot over the top of Ithaca keeper Stacey DiGiorgio from 18 yards out to make it a two-goal margin.
Ithaca waited nearly seven minutes to finally break through with a goal. Shoshana Bedrosian scored by finishing off her own rebound at the 67:22 mark to cut the Bomber deficit in half. Just 3:34 later, Ithaca evened the game at 2-2 as Taylor Baranowsky headed in a Jess Demczar corner at the far post.
Hartwick was unlucky not to get a third goal with just 13 minutes remaining.
Rachel Weir (New Milford, CT/New Milford) had a shot beat DiGiorgio, but her effort was cleared off the line by an Ithaca defender.
Baranowsky came close to putting the Bombers up for the first time in the match in the 86
th minute as she rang her header off the Hartwick crossbar. The game, however, would enter extra time.
Ithaca heled a 2-1 edge in shots in each of the two overtimes. Two minutes, 21 seconds into the second session, the Bombers nearly ended the contest. Jocelyn Ravesi registered a shot that was destined for the far corner, but a Hartwick back cleared the ball off the goal line to keep the game level.
The Hawks were out-shot 29-11 in the contest. The Bombers earned eight of the match's nine corners.
Megan McGillycuddy (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) ended the game with eight saves for the Hawks in goal. DiGiorgio made five stops for the Bombers.
Women's soccer is off until a home conference match against Houghton on Saturday, October 1. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
