ONEONTA, NY – The Hartwick women's field hockey team looked to end the visiting Washington and Jefferson College's unbeaten season on Saturday afternoon at Wright Stadium. Two-time Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week
Shannon Carter (Falls Church, VA/J.E.B. Stuart) rejected 18 shots in the contest to negate the Presidents' offense, but with little over a minute remaining in regulation, Amanda Steffey scored the only goal of the game. Steffey redirected the initial feed inside through the scrum of Hartwick defenders. With the setback, Hartwick is 6-2 overall and 1-2 in the Empire 8. Washington and Jefferson stands at 7-0 on the season and 3-0 in conference.
The Presidents out-shot Hartwick in shots, 26-4. Presidents' keeper Karlie Baran registered two saves. Steffey led her team with 14 shots, 10 of which were stopped by Carter.
Sarah Ryan (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) (2),
Allyson Quirk (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) and
Abby White (Binghamton, NY/Windsor Central) added shots for the Hawks.
Hartwick only received two corners in contrast to WJC, which earned 10.
Field hockey pauses its conference slate and visits Vassar College in a non-conference game on September 28
th. The match begins at 4 p.m.
