Hawks Open Up Empire 8 Play With 57-35 Rout of Elmira

ELMIRA, NY – Hartwick held host Elmira to 2-of-26 (7.7%) shooting in the opening half in a 57-35 victory at Speidel Gymnasium on Tuesday in the Empire 8 Conference opener for both teams. The Soaring Eagles put up just one point and turned the ball over ten times in the first quarter and an 18-6 run in the second would hand the Hawks a big 25-7 lead in the win.
           
The victory is Hartwick's fourth of the season (4-5). The Hawks have now defeated the Soaring Eagles for the twelfth time in the last 13 meetings between the two squads. 'Wick has won the last four clashes and improves to 49-11 all-time against EC.
           
Hartwick had five players scoring at least eight points, led by Carly Johnson's (Greenville, NY/Greenville Central) 14. Jacqui Foreman (Tolland, CT/Tolland) contributed 13 points and a game- and season-high 16 rebounds for the Hawks.
           
'Wick would finish the game shooting 40% (22-for-55) from the field. The Hawks would hold Elmira to 17% (10-for-59) from the floor and they out-rebounded the hosts by a margin of 47-38. They also out-scored the Soaring Eagles 30-12 in the paint.
           
Johnson would lead the way for the Hawks in the opening half with nine points with Caitlin Corbett (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) contributing five as the they earned the big lead.
           
In the third quarter, the Hartwick advantage swelled to as many as 32 points before settling on a 48-18 advantage heading into the fourth period. In the final 10 minutes, the visitors maintained at least a 25-point edge until a minute and a half remained in the game to close out the victory.
           
Johnson made five of her nine shots, including a pair of three-point field goals. She also tied for a game-high with three steals. Foreman connected on five of her 10 shots.
           
Emily Stone (Granby, CT/Granby) scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds, and Corbett and Anna Hickey (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth) each registered eight points. Hickey also netted a couple of three-point baskets. LeeAnne Green (Windsor, CT/Watkinson School) pulled down seven boards.

Elmira, which snapped a three-game winning streak with tonight's loss, was led by Rachel Vespucci's 11 points. Danielle Cleary added 10.       
           
The Hawks remain on the road on Thursday night when they travel to Utica College for a 6 p.m. game at Harold T. Clark Athletic Center.
