WASHINGTON, PA – Hartwick field hockey had a lead for nearly 30 minutes and was up with under 10 minutes to play in regulation, but host Washington & Jefferson tied the score and picked up the game-winner 5:37 into the second overtime to earn the victory.
The Hawks slip to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in the Empire 8 Conference. The Presidents are now 8-3 and still unbeaten in league play at 5-0.
Hartwick struck first with just 3:44 remaining in the opening half.
Gina Cozetti (Commack, NY/Commack) scored on a rebound following a shot off the post for the 1-0 'Wick lead.
In the second half, W&J would out-shoot Hartwick 10-4. However,
Tegan Robinson (Mechanicville, NY/Shenendehowa) and
Brooke Singer (Johnson City, NY/Maine Endwell) both registered shots that would need defensive saves from defender Gabby Carr to keep it a one-goal game.
Less than one minute after Carr's second defensive save on Singer's effort, the Presidents would find the tying goal. A cross found the stick of Sofiya Bobrovnikova and the ball made its way to Rachel Buyan who scored past 'Wick keeper
Allyson Osborne (Nottingham, PA/Solanco) with 9:19 left.
Washington & Jefferson had the advantage in the first overtime with seven shots to the Hawks' three.
Marissa Downes (Boiceville, NY/Onteora) had the third Hawks' shot that forced a defensive save in the contest. This time, Claire Shaak kept it out.
The winner came on the Presidents' fourth shot of the second overtime. Following a corner, Shaak fed Alana Boyd for a 12-yard shot that found the net and ended the game.
W&J finished the match with advantages in shots (26-13) and penalty corners (11-9). Osborne would stop 11 President shots. Karlie Baran made six saves for the hosts.
The Hawks remain in the hunt for their second straight Empire 8 playoff berth. 'Wick will host Stevens next Saturday and travel to St. John Fisher on October 28 in their final two league games. Hartwick next plays against Oswego at home on Tuesday, October 17.
