ONEONTA, NY – Senior forward
Sierra Bentley (Worcester, NY/Schenevus) scored just over three minutes into the second overtime to power Hartwick women's soccer to a key 1-0 conference victory over St. John Fisher Saturday at Elmore Field.
The result marks the fifth shutout in Empire 8 play for the Hawks in six contests. It is the ninth shutout overall this season. The total is tied for second in the history of the program. Only the 1990 Hartwick team had more clean sheets with 11.
The winner came following a ball to the right side from
Rachel Weir (New Milford, CT/New Milford).
Maddy Paul (Seattle, WA/Nathan Hale) then served a cross into the box and Bentley was there to head home her second goal of the year and first game-winner of the season.
The Hawks held a territorial advantage in every period. They held a 12-5 advantage in shots through regulation and out-shot the Cardinals 5-0 in the overtimes.
Twelve of the Hawks' 17 shots were on target. Cardinal keeper Melissa McGowan would stop 11 of them on the day. Bentley finished the day with three. Weir and
Madison Miller (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) each had two.
Cassandra Robataille (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) earned her third straight shutout in goal and fifth overall this season.
The Hawks, now 10-4 overall, have reached the 10-win mark in each of the last three seasons. With a 5-1 conference record, they stay even with Stevens atop the Empire standings with two games remaining in the hunt for the top seed and hosting rights for the playoffs.
Hartwick travels to Utica on Wednesday for one of the two remaining E8 games. Kickoff is 7 p.m. from Charles Gaetano Stadium.
