NORTHAMPTON, MA – Hartwick had to battle back from a one-goal deficit to secure a 1-1 tie on Saturday at Smith College in Northampton, MA. The Hawks are now 10-4-1 on the season. The Pioneers' record moves to 5-9-1.
The hosts held a 6-2 edge in shots in the opening half. One of them snapped the Hawks' shutout string at 403 minutes. Jordan Isaacs would get the unassisted goal to give the Pioneers the lead at the 29:49 mark. It was just the second goal in the last eight matches that the Hawks have conceded.
Hartwick came out swinging in the second half, out-shooting Smith by a margin of 7-3. The Hawks, who trailed for over 38 minutes, finally broke through the Pioneer defense in the 68
th minute. Freshman
Tanner Reed (Unadilla, NY/Unatego Central) would register the tally as she scored her first collegiate goal.
The two teams would each record three shots in the final 22 minutes of regulation but the game would reach extra time. Goalkeeper
Cassandra Robataille (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) would record three saves right on top of one another in the second overtime to keep the game level.
Brooke Wojciechowski (West Bridgewater, MA/W/ Bridgewater) and
Maddy Paul (Seattle, WA/Nathan Hale) had the final two shots of the match for 'Wick but neither found its way into the Smith net.
The Pioneers held the advantage in shots for the match, 15-11. They also had the edge in corners, 8-3. Paul would end the day with three shots, two of them on goal.
Sierra Bentley (Worcester, NY/Schenevus) and
Rachel Pine (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls) each had two shots.
Robataille made seven saves for the Hawks. Shelby Hall and Julia Donovan combined for six stops for Smith.
Hartwick hosts Oneonta State on Wednesday night. The Hawks and Red Dragons kick off at 7 p.m. from Elmore Field.
