Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Rolls at Wells, 6-0

AURORA, NY – Seven different players registered at least a point as Hartwick field hockey overwhelmed host Wells College by a final score of 6-0 in a game played at Wells Turf Field in Aurora, NY.

Marissa Downes (Boiceville, NY/Onteora) and Julia Butts (Amenia, NY/Webutuck) each scored a pair of goals to lead the Hartwick offense. Downes would net what would prove to be the game-winning goal at 16:18 of the first half. Bella Wheeler (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) had the assist on the play.

Just 1:34 from halftime, the Hawks tacked on a second. On a corner, Downes found Brooke Singer (Johnson City/Maine Endwell), who blasted her shot past Allison Solomon and the Hawks would enter halftime with a two-goal cushion.

Downes scored her second on the day off a Claudia Stone (Akron, NY/Akron) feed 5:21 into the second half. Stone then cleaned up on a rebound in front of the Wells' cage less than seven minutes later for Hartwick's fourth tally of the afternoon. It marked her ninth goal of the campaign.

Butts then recorded a pair of goals just 32 seconds apart for 'Wick. The first was set up by Kate LaPorta (Schenectady, NY/Niskayuna). Butts then got her third of the year off a feed from Hope Mowchan (Newington, CT/Newington) which closed out the day's scoring.

The Hawks had big advantages in shots (28-3) and corners (15-3) in the contest.

Laura Downey (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem) played the opening 54 minutes in goal and made two saves. Shannon MacMaster (Hamilton, ONT/Sherwood Second. School) played the last 16 minutes but she didn't need to make a stop. Solomon stopped 14 shots for the Express.

Hartwick's final regular season game is Saturday, October 28 on the road at St. John Fisher (13-3, 5-1 E8) beginning at 11 a.m. The Hawks face a must-win to clinch their second straight berth in the conference playoffs. A victory over the Cardinals and the Hawks would claim the No. 2 seed. A loss and they would finish in a three-way for third place but would miss the playoffs on tie-breakers.
