Stalder Second-Half Tally Enough as Field Hockey Defeats Nazareth, 1-0

ROCHESTER, NY – Hartwick controlled the proceedings, out-shooting host Nazareth 23-5 and earning 18 penalty corners to the Golden Flyers' three, in a 1-0 shutout on Saturday. Maria Stalder (New Woodstock, NY/Cazenovia) scored the game's lone goal at the 59:16 mark of the match.

The win for Hartwick improves its overall record to 8-4 and its Empire 8 mark to 3-1. The Flyers sink to 1-9 overall and 0-4 in league play.

The Hawks dominated the first half earning 11 corners and firing 14 shots at the Naz cage. Golden Flyer goalkeeper Kimber Nourse would keep the Hawks out, however, as she stopped 11 shots in the 35-minute period.

Hartwick continued to apply pressure on the Naz goal as it searched for the go-ahead tally. The Hawks earned six corners and out-shot the hosts 4-1 through the opening 24 minutes of the second half. Finally, capitalizing on a shot from eight yards away through a scrum, Stalder netted her fourth goal of the season to put 'Wick ahead to stay.

The Hawks' defense only allowed one more shot and one more corner from the Golden Flyers, both occurring within a minute and a half after Hartwick took the lead. Nothing came of either chance and 'Wick kept Naz in its own end for much of the remainder of the game in the victory.

Allyson Osborne (Nottingham, PA/Solanco) would make three saves in the contest for Hartwick in the shutout. Nourse ended the game with 16 stops for Naz.

Allyson Quirk (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) and Claudia Stone (Akron, NY/Akron) tied for a game-high with five shots apiece. Brooke Singer (Johnson City, NY/Maine Endwell) and Gina Cozetti (Commack, NY/Commack) chipped in with four shots each.

The Hawks next travel to Washington, PA for a Saturday, October 14 match at conference rival Washington & Jefferson. The Presidents are unbeaten in league play at 4-0. The game also marks a rematch of last season's Empire 8 semifinal.
