Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late Rally Lifts Hawks to First Win, 65-59 Over SUNY Oneonta

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick's women's basketball team trailed by five points with under four minutes remaining in the game but the Hawks would score the next 14 points to earn their first victory of the season and knock off previously unbeaten SUNY Oneonta, 65-59, on Tuesday night at Lambros Arena. Hartwick is now 1-4. The Red Dragons drop to 4-1.

In a game that featured eight lead changes and four tie scores, the Red Dragons used a 10-5 run to break a 46-all tie to take a 56-51 advantage with 5:16 left in the contest. Kelly Pine (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls) drained a three-pointer and Mary Schoenherr (Unionville, CT/Farmington) made a layup to tie the score at 56 less than two minutes later.

After a defensive stop, Carly Johnson (Greenville, NY/Greenville Central) dropped in a layup at 2:44 to put the Hawks ahead for good. She converted the old-fashioned three-point play and Pine drilled another trey to make it a six-point, 62-56 game to give the Hawks some breathing room. They closed out the win with their final three points from the foul line.

The Red Dragons would go 0-for-9 with two turnovers down the stretch before scoring on a three-pointer with under 10 seconds left.

Johnson poured in a game-high 22 points, which included 15 in the opening half of play. She would knock down a trio of three-pointers. Schoenherr flirted with a triple-double with 14 points, and game-highs of 10 rebounds and eight assists. She also had a game-high six steals.

Caitlin Corbett (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) added 12 points and seven rebounds. Pine finished the game with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Hartwick shot 43.3% (23-for-53) from the floor on the night. They made 43.8% (7-for-16) from three-point range. They would hold the Red Dragons to just 31.9% (22-for-69) shooting.

Olivia Allrich led Oneonta with 15 points. Madeline Frank added a double-double of 11 points and 10 boards.

Hartwick is off until December 15 when it travels to participate in the Hilton Scranton Poinsettia Tournament. The Hawks play the host Royals at 8 p.m.
