Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Nazareth, 16-8

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick trailed visiting Nazareth 7-5 deep in the first half, but the Golden Flyers would score eight of the next nine goals to pull away for a 16-8 victory on Saturday at Wright Stadium.
           
With the result, the Hawks slip to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in the Empire 8 Conference. The Flyers improve to 4-2 and 1-0 in E8.
           
Lauren Rosenberg (Smithtown, NY/Commack) led Hartwick with four goals and an assist. She now has 146 career tallies with cracks the all-time top 10 in the program's record books.
           
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) added two goals for the Hawks. Hailey Pooler (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) contributed a goal and two assists.
           
Hartwick grabbed the early lead as Rosenberg scored from a Pooler assist 1:46 into the contest. The game remained in the Hawks' favor for over seven minutes before the Golden Flyers netted a pair 28 seconds apart for a 2-1 lead.
           
Rosenberg answered for Hartwick at the 19:42 mark to tie the game. Naz then scored three times in a 1:24 window to up its lead to 5-2. The two teams traded three goals apiece until the six-minute mark of the half. Rosenberg, Pooler, and Werner scored the Hawks' goals as they closed the gap to two, 7-5.
           
Nazareth would close the half on a 3-0 run and the visitors would take a 10-5 advantage into halftime.
           
The Golden Flyers added another two scores early in the second half to increase the margin to 12-5. Emma Knapp (Danbury, CT/Danbury) got one back for Hartwick at 18:18, but three in a row for Naz made it a 15-6 game.
           
With under five minutes left in the contest, Rosenberg scored her fourth of the game and Werner closed out the day's scoring with under a minute to play.
           
Nazareth would hold a 30-18 margin shots in the game. The Golden Flyers led in ground balls, 31-19. Hartwick had the advantage in draw controls, 16-9.
           
Melissa Gifford (Penacook, NH/Merrimack Valley) and goalkeeper Carleigh Tarala (Tully, NY/Tully) each recorded three ground balls to lead the Hawks. Tarala added seven saves in cage.
           
Kayla Tracey (Bardonia, NY/Clarkstown South) led all players with seven draw controls. Rosenberg added six. Nine different Hawks registered at least one caused turnover, led by Gifford's three.
           
Nazareth was led by Kate Rothrock's five goals and two assists. Jamie Martin added three goals, and Haley DeVona chipped in with two goals and two helpers.
           
Hartwick returns to Wright Stadium on Monday for a non-conference clash with SUNY Potsdam. The opening draw is set for 4 p.m.
