ONEONTA, NY - After Hartwick boasted a convincing 9-2 advantage early into the second half, the visiting SUNY Potsdam Bears nearly forced overtime firing off the final six tallies of the game. However, the Hawks outlasted their opponent's late push, 9-8, at Wright Stadium Monday afternoon.
The host scored the game's first four goals for one of two 4-0 runs. The first rally came on the heels of
Lauren Rosenberg (Smithtown, NY/Commack) (2),
Kayla Tracey (Bardonia, NY/Clarkstown South) and
Ashley Werner's (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) early goals before Murphy Newman ended the streak.
Tracey, Rosenberg and
Jennifer Darasz's (Gorham, ME/Gorham) consecutive goals supplied the blue and white with the second 4-0 spurt, this time to be broken up by Katie Lapinski, who rounded out scoring in the opening half.
Empire 8 Player of the Week Rosenberg, scored her 22
nd goal of the year to start the second-half scoring marking the final point for 'Wick on the afternoon.
Beginning in the 18
th minute, Alyssa Ferenczy and Newman each scored on shots in a near four-minute span for a 9-4 mark.
Lapinski took advantage of her team's man-up situation and connected on the front end of her back-to-back opportunities with 11:16 left to play. She scored again less than a minute later and had a hand in Alli Stark's goal which made it a two-point game. Lapinski tied Murphy as the high-point getters for the Bears (4).
With 82 ticks until the final buzzer, Danielle Pound brought her team the closest it had been all afternoon when her attempt closed the Bears' deficit to just one.
Melissa Gifford (Penacook, NH/Merrimack Valley) won a much-needed draw control for the Hawks on the ensuing play but 'Wick would go on to commit a turnover just seconds later.
Potsdam managed the ball but was unsuccessful in capitalizing as
Emma Knapp's (Canandaigua, NY/Marcus Whitman) pressuring defense forced a turnover keeping the game in the host's favor.
Tracey grabbed the ground ball and the Hawks ran out the clock for the win.
Potsdam out-shot Hartwick 21-18 but 'Wick keeper
Ashley Jablonowski (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) made eight saves in cage. Katie Longamore made six stops for Potsdam.
Hailey Pooler's (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) game-high five helpers bested a new personal mark while Rosenberg's four goals and four draw controls leading on the afternoon. Tracey and
Hazel Flores (Brentwood, NY/Brentwood) had impressive defensive showings with Tracey crediting six ground balls and Flores supplying three ground balls and four caused turnovers.
The Hawks have now won three of their last four and will look to improve their season clip in a non-league game at local rival Oneonta this Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. before embarking on a three-game conference swing.
