ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick rallied from a 6-1 second-quarter deficit to score 11 of the next 14 goals and held off a late Oneonta rally in a 12-11 triumph at Red Dragon Field Wednesday. The Hartwick victory snaps a three-game winless streak against Oneonta and ups the Hawks' all-time mark to 21-14 against their local rivals.
'Wick improves to 4-2 on the season with the win. Oneonta falls to 3-4.
After
Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) scored the first of his game-high four goals 3:39 into the first quarter, the Red Dragons answered with five straight goals to close the first quarter and added their sixth 5:58 into the second for a five-goal advantage.
Ferguson would net three goals with
Mike Majchrzak (Plantsville, CT/Southington) adding another as the Hawks netted four goals in a 3:07 span to pull within one, 6-5, to end the half.
Conner Long (Hardwick, NJ/Blair Academy) scored both of Hartwick's goals in the third quarter as the two teams traded tallies. They would enter the final quarter all tied up at 7-7.
The Red Dragons jumped in front 14 ticks into the fourth on a man-up goal, but the Hawks came right back with three straight goals from Majchrzak,
Jake Sachse (Lutherville, MD/Boys' Latin School of MD), and
Brett Maguire (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) in a 2:06 window to move ahead, 10-8, with 10:31 remaining.
With 9:41 to play, Oneonta made it a one-goal game with its ninth goal of the game.
Cordell Armstrong (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) answered at 8:58 and Sachse scored his second of the game to increase the margin to three (12-9) five minutes, 47 seconds later.
The Red Dragons cut the deficit to two with 1:04 left and they made it 12-11 with 29.9 seconds remaining. They would win the ensuing face-off but turned the ball over allowing Hartwick to run out the clock for the victory.
Sachse would finish with two goals and three assists for 'Wick. Long and Majchrzak each scored a pair and Armstrong and Maguire each recorded a goal and an assist.
Wyatt Long (Hardwick, NJ/Blair Academy) and
David Demand (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) each dished out an assist.
The Hawks would finish the game with a large advantage in shots, 46-25. They out-shot the Red Dragons 27-3 in the middle quarters combined. 'Wick had a slight edge in ground balls, 27-26. Both teams won a total of 13 face-offs.
Eric Schweitzer (Babylon, NY/Babylon) had a big game for the Hawks with game-highs of 14 ground balls and six caused turnovers. Goalkeeper
Connor O'Brien (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) made five saves in cage.
The Red Dragons received three goals from TJ Kilmetis. Eight other players scored for the hosts. Andrew Helfman made 13 stops in the Oneonta goal.
Hartwick takes its 4-2 record into a pivotal Empire 8 Conference game on Saturday. The Hawks will take on Alfred University at Wright Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.
