ONEONTA, NY – Seven different Hawks scored on Saturday as Hartwick defeated Alfred 10-8 in an Empire 8 Conference showdown at Wright Stadium. The Hawks improve to 5-2 on the year and stay unbeaten in the league at 2-0. They have now won three straight games. The win marks the first 2-0 start in conference play for the Hawks since 2007.
Jake Sachse (Lutherville, MD/Boys' Latin School of MD) led the Hawks with a pair of goals and an assist.
Nick Couvaris (Seaford, NY/Seaford) also registered a pair of goals.
Hartwick started the game with two goals from Couvaris and
Conner Long (Hardwick, NJ/Blair Academy) in the first 2:08 of action and the Hawks led for the rest of the contest. The two teams traded goals for the rest of the quarter with Sachse and
Wyatt Long (Hardwick, NJ/Blair Academy) recording the 'Wick tallies.
Two straight goals in the first 2:13 of the second quarter from
Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) and
Chris VanDemark (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post) extended the Hawks' advantage to 6-2. Alfred answered with three straight tallies to pull within one and the teams once again traded a pair of goals to end the quarter.
Cordell Armstrong (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) and Sachse scored the Hartwick goals as it entered halftime up 8-7.
In the third quarter, the Hawks out-shot the Saxons 8-7 but neither team was able to find the net to set the stage for the final period. Couvaris made it a two-goal game with his second at the 10:59 mark. Ferguson scored his 19
th goal of the season from
Wyatt Long with 5:55 left before AU scored the final goal of the match with 3:28 showing on the clock.
Eric Schweitzer (Babylon, NY/Babylon) led all players with nine ground balls. He tied for a game-high with teammate
Garrison Wojtas (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) with three caused turnovers. Wojtas contributed six ground balls for 'Wick.
James Vogt (Stratham, NH/Exeter) won 9-of-18 face-offs. He also grabbed three ground balls.
David Bianculli (Charlton, MA/Shepard Hill Regional) caused a pair of AU miscues.
Connor O'Brien (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) made five saves in goal.
Jake Lynch led the Saxons on the day with game-highs of four goals and two assists. Brandon Smith and Drew Gardner combined for 11 saves in the AU cage.
Hartwick next plays in one week at Elmira College. The opening face-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
