ELMIRA, NY – Hartwick men's lacrosse (6-2) earned astounding totals of 66 shots and 67 ground balls on Saturday in a dominating 16-3 win over Elmira College in an Empire 8 game played at Elmira-Notre Dame High School. The Hawks are now winners of four straight games and they improve to 3-0 in the E8 for the first time since 2005.
The Hawks finished the contest out-shooting the Soaring Eagles 66-9, including a 36-3 margin at halftime. They also won 20-of-22 face-offs.
Freshman
Jared Hoff (Cohoes, NY/Shaker) led a balanced 'Wick attack with game-highs of four goals and five points. Senior
Jake Sachse (Lutherville, MD/Boys' Latin School of MD) contributed three goals and one assist while freshman
Mike Majchrzak (Plantsville, CT/Southington) chipped in with a pair of tallies and one helper.
Chris Gamber (Southington, CT/Southington) also netted two goals for the Hawks.
The hosts drew first blood 55 seconds into the game to take a 1-0 advantage. It would mark the last goal the Hawks' defense would allow for over 43 minutes. Hartwick scored four straight in the first quarter for a 4-1 lead. A goal from
Chris VanDemark (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post) made it 5-1 after two periods of play.
Six goals in a 6:39 span of the third quarter increased the margin to 11-1 before EC got two back. 'Wick made it 12-2 heading into the final quarter, and it out-scored Elmira 4-0 in the period for the final 16-3 score line.
Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) and
David Demand (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) each scored a goal and dished out two assists for the Blue and White.
Matt McCallan (Bay Shore, NY/West Islip) added a goal and an assist.
Brett Maguire (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) had the remaining tally for the Hawks.
Nick Couvaris (Seaford, NY/Seaford) recorded two assists and
Zach Borges (East Rockaway, NY/Lynbrook) and
Dylan Reynolds (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee) added one helper each.
Twenty different Hawks registered at least one ground ball, led by
Eric Schweitzer's (Babylon, NY/Babylon) 10. He would also accumulate a game-high four caused turnovers. Reynolds added eight ground balls and was perfect in the face-off circle winning all 12 attempts.
Cordell Armstrong (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) contributed six ground balls. Maguire and Hoff each had five.
James Vogt (Stratham, NH/Exeter) won eight face-offs and tallied four ground balls for 'Wick.
Connor O'Brien (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) was only called upon to make two saves in 45 minutes of action in cage.
C. J. Alesandrini (Schenectady, NY/Colonie) played the final 15 minutes.
Hartwick takes its unblemished conference record into Hoboken, NJ on Wednesday, April 12. Stevens Institute of Technology hosts the Hawks at DeBaun Athletic Complex beginning at 4 p.m.
