HOBOKEN, NJ – Hartwick men's lacrosse fell from the unbeaten ranks in the Empire 8 Conference and snapped a four-game winning streak on Wednesday with a 12-7 defeat at Stevens Institute of Technology in a game played at DeBaun Athletic Complex in Hoboken.
Jake Sachse (Lutherville, MD/Boys' Latin School of MD) led Hartwick with two goals and two assists on the day.
Brett Maguire (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) added a pair of tallies and one assist.
Cordell Armstrong (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) got the scoring started 3:33 into the contest off a feed from Sachse for a 1-0 Hawks' lead. The Ducks tied the score with under six minutes left and the two teams remained tied through the end of the first quarter.
Stevens rallied for six straight goals in the second quarter to take control of the contest. Sachse answered for the Hawks from Maguire at the 1:43 mark before the Ducks added their eighth goal of the game with nine seconds to go to grab an 8-2 edge at halftime.
Two more goals in the first 3:38 of the third quarter extended the margin to eight, 10-2. Maguire and
Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) each registered goals for 'Wick in a 54-second span to close the gap to six.
Mike Majchrzak (Plantsville, CT/Southington) then netted an unassisted tally to begin the final quarter. Stevens got a goal back before Maguire and Sachse scored consecutive goals and the gap was closed to 11-7 with 6:23 left to play.
The Hawks won the ensuing face-off but turned it over. Stevens took advantage and recorded the final goal to close out the day's scoring at the 4:41 mark. Hartwick fired off two more shots the rest of the way but could get no closer.
Hartwick ended the game with a 38-36 advantage in shots for the contest. The Ducks had a slim edge in ground balls, 34-32, with 'Wick winning 13 draws to Stevens' 12.
Eric Schweitzer (Babylon, NY/Babylon) earned a team-best seven ground balls for the Hawks.
James Vogt (Stratham, NH/Exeter) contributed five ground balls and won nine face-offs. Armstrong,
David Bianculli (Charlton, MA/Shepard Hill Regional), and
Wyatt Long (Hardwick, NJ/Blair Academy) each added three ground balls.
Connor O'Brien (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) made nine saves in cage for the Hawks.
Stevens was paced by Connor McKeon's three goals and an assist. Max Bailey added two scores and two helpers and Tommy Dawson and John Boutureira each scored twice.
Hartwick hosts Nazareth on Saturday in another Empire 8 matchup. The Hawks and Golden Flyers get underway at 2 p.m. from Wright Stadium.
