ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick held visiting Nazareth to just two goals in the first 29 minutes of action on Saturday, but the Golden Flyers netted a total of eight goals in the final two periods to secure an 11-3 win over the Hawks in Empire 8 men's lacrosse at Wright Stadium.
The Hawks fall to 6-4 overall and 3-2 in league play with the result. Nazareth improves to 7-7 and 4-2.
Cordell Armstrong (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area),
Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin), and
Brett Maguire (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) scored the Hartwick goals on the day.
Eric Schweitzer (Babylon, NY/Babylon) and
Garrison Wojtas (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) combined for 13 ground balls and nine caused turnovers.
Both teams went scoreless through the first 15 minutes of play. The Hawks and Golden Flyers would fire a total of 19 shots at the opposing team's goal, but only seven of them were on target in the quarter.
Armstrong finally broke the ice for the Hawks at 12:09 of the second quarter with an unassisted goal. Naz tied the game just over three minutes later, but Ferguson tallied from
David Demand (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) 55 seconds later to put 'Wick in front at 7:55. Hunter Burdick netted the first of his game-high four goals for Naz at 6:10 to deadlock the score at 2-2.
Burdick would sneak in a second with just over three seconds remaining in the second quarter. As a result, the Golden Flyers entered halftime up by a count of 3-2.
The visitors scored two quick goals in the third quarter to surge ahead. Paul Walter scored the first of his two goals 1:14 into the quarter and Burdick tacked on his third 1:05 later as Naz upped the lead to three, 5-2. The Flyers made it 6-2 later in the quarter and headed into the final frame up by the four-goal margin.
Naz again score two early in the fourth at the 12:58 and 11:29 marks, respectively. Later they added a pair of tallies 60 seconds apart and the Flyers opened up a 10-2 advantage. Their final goal came with 2:20 left in the contest before Maguire found the net with 1:03 to go.
Naz would dominate the draw as Seth DeLisle would win 13-of-17 face-offs. He also gathered a game-high 11 ground balls.
The Golden Flyers finished the game out-shooting the Hawks 41-31. They held a 30-22 edge in ground balls.
Schweitzer accumulated a team-high nine ground balls and a game-high five caused turnovers for the Hawks. Wojtas added four ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Connor O'Brien (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) stopped 11 shots for the Hawks in goal. Andrew Leahey and Alex Winkler combined for nine saves for Naz.
The Hawks play their final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday against Hamilton before facing Houghton (Apr. 22), Utica (Apr. 26), and Ithaca (Apr. 29) to close out their Empire 8 schedule.
