ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick trailed by as many as five goals in the third quarter before rallying to tie the game with under four minutes left against Hamilton on Tuesday at Wright Stadium. The Continentals, however, would register the final goal with 1:52 to play to secure the win.
Hartwick falls to 6-5 overall with the setback. Hamilton improves to 4-10.
The Continentals lead was four, 10-6, heading into the final period of play.
Matt McCallan (Bay Shore, NY/West Islip) started the comeback with a goal 2:24 into the fourth.
Nick Couvaris (Seaford, NY/Seaford) cut the deficit to two 42 seconds later, and
Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) tallied for three 'Wick goals in a 2:14 span to make it a 10-9 game.
Cordell Armstrong's (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) unassisted goal evened the score at the 3:50 mark. The Hawks had the ball with under three minutes remaining but a turnover gave it back to Hamilton which cashed in with what would prove to be the game-winner at 1:52. Armstrong would fire a pair of shots wide and Ferguson had an effort stopped by Hamilton keeper John Schisler with 19 seconds to go. The Continentals cleared and ran out the clock to claim the one-goal win.
Ten different Hawks registered at least a point in the game. Ferguson led Hartwick with two goals and an assist.
Brett Maguire (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) added a pair of tallies.
Jake Sachse (Lutherville, MD/Boys' Latin School of MD) contributed a goal and one helper with
Mike Majchrzak (Plantsville, CT/Southington) and
Wyatt Long (Hardwick, NJ/Blair Academy) also scoring.
David Demand (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) dished out a team-best two assists.
The Hawks held advantages in shots (41-31), ground balls (34-32), and face-offs (14-11) in the contest.
Chris Conley paced the visitors with four goals and an assist. Jack Gaul netted a hat-trick and Clay McCollum chipped in a pair of goals.
Garrison Wojtas (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) led all players with 12 ground balls and four caused turnovers for the Hawks.
Eric Schweitzer (Babylon, NY/Babylon) added four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Maguire and
James Vogt (Stratham, NH/Exeter) each had three ground balls. Vogt also won 14-of-24 face-offs.
Connor O'Brien (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and
C. J. Alesandrini (Schenectady, NY/Colonie) combined for eight saves in the game for 'Wick. Schisler stopped 11 for Hamilton.
Hartwick returns to Empire 8 Conference action on Saturday when it hosts Houghton at 3 p.m.
