ITHACA, NY – Hartwick's women's lacrosse team, playing in an early Empire 8 Conference opener, fell to host Ithaca College on Wednesday by a final score of 16-4. The Hawks fall to 1-1 on the season with the result. The Bombers, who entered the game ranked #18 in the latest IWLCA national poll, improve to 3-0.
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) led the Hawks with a pair of goals.
Megan Young (Gansevoort, NY/Schuylerville) and
Jennifer Darasz (Gorham, ME/Gorham) also scored with
Hailey Pooler (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) contributing an assist.
Ithaca's Ally Runyon scored four of her game-high six goals in a seven and a half minute span in the first half to open up a 6-0 lead for the Bombers with 17:52 left. Werner would answer for Hartwick with Pooler earning the assist 49 seconds later.
The Bombers registered three straight tallies in 1:32 later in the half for a 9-1 advantage. The two teams then traded goals for the final 7:30 of the half. Young scored on a free-position goal and Darasz tallied short-handed to close the half with 'Wick trailing 11-3.
Three straight goals from IC in the first 3:58 of the second half extended the margin. Werner added her second goal with just over 20 minutes remaining in the game before the Bombers added the final two goals of the game near the midway point of the period.
Ashley Jablonowski (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) made 11 saves in cage for 'Wick in the first 34:27.
Carleigh Tarala (Tully, NY/Tully) played the final 25:33 and stopped seven Bomber shots.
Lauren Rosenberg (Smithtown, NY/Commack) would lead Hartwick in ground balls in the contest with five. Jablonowski and
Minnie Schupp (Menands, NY/Shaker) each contributed two. Seven different players registered one caused turnover.
Runyon finished with six goals and two assists for the hosts. Morgan Cadwell had three goals, Morgan Racicot added one goal and four assists, and Danika Wagener had a goal and three helpers. Emily Ross (6) and Kimberly Presuto (2) combined for eight saves in goal.
Hartwick is now off for the next nine days. The Hawks were scheduled to play SUNY New Paltz at home on Saturday but cold temperatures in the forecast forced a change. The two teams will now play on Friday, March 17 at Wright Stadium beginning at 4 p.m.
