ALFRED, NY – After tallying its first conference win of the season last night, the Hartwick women's lacrosse team turned around and downed Alfred, 22-2, at Yunevich Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The win places 'Wick at an even 2-2 in the Empire 8 while Alfred continues to seek its first league win at 0-2.
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) scored the game's first two goals by the 27
th minute to give the Hawks the early 2-0 lead. She would end the game as the high goal-scorer on the afternoon with five while adding a helper, a caused turnover, and seven draw controls.
In the next two minutes, Hartwick would log four more goals, two in the 26
th minute from the stick of
Jennifer Darasz (Gorham, ME/Gorham) and
Lauren Rosenberg (Smithtown, NY/Commack) and then in the 25
th minute both to the credit of
Kayla Tracey (Bardonia, NY/Clarkstown South). Tracey finished with a pair of goals and a pair of assists while Darasz ended with three goals and three ground balls.
Werner netted a hat trick by the 24:39 mark for a 7-0 score before feeding
Emma Knapp (Canandaigua, NY/Marcus Whitman) the assist a near two minutes after.
Ann Bosio's (Canaan, CT/Housatonic Valley Regional) two goals and Rosenberg's one goal and two assists aided the Hawks in a 14-0 score at the intermission. Rosenberg scored a total of three goals and tallied four assists by the final buzzer.
Hailey Pooler (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) helped on 'Wick's early second-half goals and netted one herself for her team's 16-0 advantage. At 17:27, Miranda Gilbert put Alfred on the board before allowing two more 'Wick goals.
The Saxons again found the back of the net, this time at the hands of Tracy Johnston for a 19-2 score with 11 minutes left.
Bosio,
Taylor Manzelli (Watervliet, NY/Shaker) and Werner hit shots in the final eight minutes to round out scoring on the afternoon.
Melissa Gifford (Penacook, NH/Merrimack Valley) and
Mattie Coffey (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) corralled four ground balls apiece while
Carleigh Tarala (Tully, NY/Tully) and
Minnie Schupp (Menands, NY/Shaker) each totaled three.
Gifford and Darasz each added three caused turnovers of Alfred's 26 miscues.
A week from today, Hartwick will host Elmira next Saturday, April 8 at 1 p.m. at Wright Stadium.
