ONEONTA, NY – A trio of goals scored at the hands of
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) and
Lauren Rosenberg (Smithtown, NY/Commack) boasted new career milestones as the Hartwick women's lacrosse team defeated Elmira, 10-5, on Saturday afternoon at Wright Stadium.
For the 18
th meeting all-time, Werner's career-high six goals and Rosenberg's entrance into Hartwick's 200-point club, enabled the Hawks' to win its third straight. The Hawks are now 7-3 overall and 3-2 Empire 8, They held off Elmira's hopes of its first conference win of the season as it drops to 2-7 and 0-3 The Hawks even up the all-time clip at 9-9.
Hartwick opened a 2-0 score on the heels of goals stemming from
Jennifer Darasz (Gorham, ME/Gorham) just 34 ticks into the contest on a feed from
Hailey Pooler (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) and
Kayla Tracey's (Bardonia, NY/Clarkstown South) tally through traffic in the 28
th minute.
The Werner/Rosenberg duo connected on its first score of the afternoon to cap off the 3-0 surge by 'Wick a mere four minutes later.
Elmira responded filling the margin to just one after both Kelsey Quail and Rachel Grampp found the back of the cage rounding out the 3-2 clip at 21:43. HC's Darasz and EC's Baker traded goals in almost three minutes, 4-3.
For the next scoring play, on a wrap-around pass to Werner at 15:25, Rosenberg notched her 200
th point as she joined a prestigious club of only seven other players in the history of the program to hit such mark. At 9:25, Darasz cashed in all alone concluding scoring behind the break, 6-3.
The Hawks showed no signs of slowing down after the intermission as Werner scored on three uninterrupted shots to the help of Rosenberg,
Emma Knapp (Canandaigua, NY/Marcus Whitman) and Darasz, all by the 10-minute mark.
The Soaring Eagles' Kylie Connell sailed one in after being awarded a free-position attempt on the brink of Werner's run just 18 seconds later, 9-4. At 3:50, Werner's scoring continued as she picked up her 21
st tally of the season.
Kelcey Crawford's free-position goal 16 seconds after concluded the scoring at Wright. Elmira was unable to get another shot off in the final three minutes.
Carleigh Tarala's (Tully, NY/Tully) 13 saves on the day is a season-high, just three shy of her career-best.
Both squads were competitive in many areas, with Hartwick winning the shot advantage, 26-24. EC corralled more ground balls, 31-29, more draw controls, 11-6, and free-position shot opportunities, 8-2.
Rosenberg (3) and Knapp (2) finished with assists while the trio of
Megan Young (Gansevoort, NY/Schuylerville),
Mattie Coffey (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) and Tracey each came up with four ground balls. Coffey also added three caused turnovers.
The Hawks stay at home and host Cazenovia on Wednesday, April 12 at 4 p.m. at Wright Stadium.
