ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick women's soccer trailed by a goal with under 10 minutes to play but used tallies from
Rachel Weir (New Milford, CT/New Milford) and
Allie Ricci (Millstone, NJ/Saint John Vianney) 6:28 apart to earn a 2-1 victory over Eastern Connecticut State on Sunday in the final game of the Mayor's Cup at SUNY Oneonta. The win improves the Hawks' record to 4-1 and wraps up second place in the tournament.
Hartwick would out-shoot the Warriors 5-2 in the opening 45 minutes of play but settled for a -0-0 deadlock at the half. Eastern Connecticut would break the ice with 24 minutes remaining in the game on a goal from Aly Clarke. Emily Bechler would be credited with the assist.
The Hawks countered at the 80:10 mark. Weir collected a loose ball well outside the box and fired a shot into the lower left corner of the goal to beat Warrior keeper Erin Collins and even the match. In the 87
th minute,
Casey Boucher (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) served a diagonal ball from the outside into Ricci who scored what would prove to be the game-winner.
Eastern managed only one shot the rest of the way which was saved by
Cassandra Robataille (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) in the Hawks' goal to preserve the victory.
Hartwick closed the match with a 12-8 advantage in shots. Robataille made three saves in the second half to earn the victory in net.
Celeste Trevellini (Bayside, NY/World Journalism Prep) played the first half but did not make a save.
At the conclusion of the tournament, center back
Madison Miller (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) was named the Defensive Most Valuable Player. Weir, Boucher and defender
Courtney Velho (Derry, NH/Pinkerton Academy) were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
Hartwick next plays on Friday, September 15 at St. Lawrence University beginning at 4 p.m.
