ONEONTA, NY – Keeping her bearing in extra minutes,
Maria Stalder (New Woodstock, NY/Cazenovia) blasted a shot slicing two defenders and goalkeeper as a corner played itself out. It would be that sophomore's attempt that would not only lift Hartwick field hockey over league opponent Utica, 2-1, but sever a seven-game drought against the Pioneers, Tuesday afternoon at Wright Stadium.
With the win, Hartwick (5-2, 2-0 E8) is just one victory shy of tying the 9-8 all-time record with Utica (5-2, 2-1 E8). This feat comes as the first since the Pioneers fell in 2009 by a 1-0 final.
Shorthanded in the extra session, Hartwick earned its seventh corner on the afternoon and
Tegan Robinson (Mechanicville, NY/Shenendehowa) would insert the ball into play.
Brooke Singer (Johnson City, NY/Maine-Endwell Sr) quickly gained possession off of the clean pass with an entry to the cage but also with an open Stalder to her right. Singer passed up her opportunity as the veteran continued the play and dribbled two steps toward the cage to cast the winner.
Utica forced overtime to the credit of Sydney Scaccia who redirected a loose ball amid a broken play following the corner effort. With just under 10 minutes left in regulation, the forward evened the Hawks' 1-0 advantage of nearly 33 minutes.
Claudia Stone (Akron, NY/Akron) opened the scoring at Wright, her first goal in three games, for the initial lead at 17:58.
Allyson Quirk (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) fought for the ball amongst a pool of defenders and with a slight touch, fed Stone who eked the shot through the congestion in front of the cage.
Hawks' goalie,
Allyson Osborne (Nottingham, PA/Solanco), notched eight saves in the contest including a crucial save in the sixth overtime minute preventing Sabrina Whitehouse's third winner of the season. Pioneers' keeper, Samantha Whitehouse, stopped 13 of 'Wick's 20 tries.
The Hawks pause league action but remain at home Saturday, September 23 as they host Morrisville at 1 p.m.
