ONEONTA, NY – In its home opener, Hartwick field hockey secured a 6-1 victory over Keuka on Sunday afternoon at Wright Stadium.
Claudia Stone (Akron, NY/Akron) influenced four of 'Wick's tallies to move the Hawks to 2-0 on the budding season. The Wolves drop to 0-2.
The senior was credited with the first goal on a crafty move just in front of the cage in the 15
th minute. Stone would go on to provide help on Hartwick's next goal seven minutes later.
At 23:40,
Maria Stalder (New Woodstock, NY/Cazenovia) netted one of her two goals on a through ball from Stone. Finding footing in traffic, Stalder ripped the ball through a pool of defenders for the two-point advantage.
The next scoring play, the first of the second half, saw the likes of Stalder and Stone but with roles reversed. At the 35:18 mark, Stalder got behind a loose ball preparing the quick pass to Stone. From the left, the senior rocketed the ball through the goalie's reach for 'Wick's hat trick.
For the contest's next two points within a five-minute span, freshman
Tegan Robinson (Mechanicville, NY/Shenendehowa) recorded her first collegiate goal and assist.
The freshman, placed on the far right, hit an eager Stalder as she blasted a shot from the middle through a sea of green jerseys in the 42
nd minute. Robinson then captured her first goal, the game's fourth, on a corner feed from
Marissa Downes (Boiceville, NY/Onteora).
Hartwick held its four-goal lead for about 14 minutes before Keuka added its first and only tally all afternoon.
The Wolves' Nicole Wilson sprinted down the middle before hitting Alysa Maddaleno for the goal cutting the visitor's deficit to three at 60:36.
Around five minutes later,
Kate LaPorta (Schenectady, NY/Niskayuna) settled the 6-1 final as she rolled the ball into the opposition's cage following a pass from Stone.
Julia Butts (Amenia, NY/Webutuck) (4) and
Brooke Singer (Johnson City, NY/Maine-Endwell Sr) (2) helped Hartwick own a 23-4 shot margin and the Hawks disallowed any Keuka offense through the first 35 minutes.
Shannon MacMaster (Hamilton, Ont/Sherwood Secondary School) rejected all but one of Keuka's attempts but starting goalie,
Allyson Osborne's (Nottingham, PA/Solanco) 56-minute appearance, awarded her the win. Kassidy Valentine saved 10 balls in the loss.
The action continues on Wright Stadium when the Hawks host local rival Oneonta on Wednesday, September 6. The contest is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
