ELMIRA, NY – Hartwick out-scored host Elmira 23-13 in the third quarter and 42-29 in the second half to snap a three-game winless streak in a 67-57 victory at Speidel Gymnasium on Thursday night.
Carly Johnson (Greenville, NY/Greenville Central) led the way for the Hawks with a game-high 24 points.
The Hawks would trail by three points, 28-25, after the opening two quarters of play. A 10-3 run to start the third quarter, with Johnson netting five straight points, put 'Wick in front 35-31. The Soaring Eagles would score the next five points to gain the upper hand, 36-35, but a
Caitlin Corbett (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) layup with 4:35 left in the third would put the Hawks ahead for good.
Hartwick (4-12, 3-4 E8) would score 10 straight points in a run that handed it a 45-36 advantage. The Hawks took a 48-41 lead into the final quarter. Elmira cut its deficit to six points three times in the fourth quarter, but an 8-2 'Wick spurt in a two-minute span late in the period would make it a 62-50 contest and put the game away.
The Hawks would shoot 40% from the field while limiting the Soaring Eagles to 34% shooting. Hartwick dominated the boards, 48-36. The Hawks' rebounding total included 13 on the offensive glass which they turned into 16 second-chance points.
Johnson would contribute eight rebounds, two three-pointers, and two blocks in the game.
Kelly Pine (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls) added a double-double of 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Mary Schoenherr (Unionville, CT/Farmington) netted 12 points and
Alexa DuBois (Hobart, NY/South Kortright) missed a double-double by one board with 10 points and nine rebounds. She had six offensive rebounds in the game. Corbett finished with eight rebounds, six points and five assists.
Elmira (10-7, 2-6 E8) was led by Danielle Cleary's 16 points. Lindsey Heaton scored 17 points and Emily Green added 10.
Hartwick looks to make it two in a row on Saturday when it visits Stevens Institute of Technology beginning at 4 p.m.
