Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) equaled a career-high with seven goals and freshman
Hanna Layton (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) added four goals and four assists as Hartwick women's lacrosse defeated Morrisville State 17-12 on Thursday at Wright Stadium.
The Hawks improve to 1-1 on the season. The Mustangs fall to 0-4 with the loss.
Jennifer Darasz (Gorham, ME/Gorham) and
Minnie Schupp (Menands, NY/Shaker) each contributed three goals for the Hawks.
Hailey Pooler (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) dished out three assists.
Hartwick took the lead for good with 20:31 left in the opening half. The Hawks would score four of five goals to jump in front 5-2 near the midway point of the half. After the Mustangs tallied, 'Wick netted three straight for an 8-3 lead just under seven minutes later. Morrisville answered back with two goals before Werner's fifth goal with five seconds remaining closed the half with the Hawks in front 9-5.
Morrisville started strong in the second half as it scored three straight goals in the first five minutes to cut the deficit to one, 9-8. It would mark the first of four times in the second half that the Mustangs would close the gap to a single goal. Each time, however, the Hawks had an answer and scored to increase the margin. Layton and Darasz scored 1:31 apart to get some breathing room for the Hawks at 14-11 with 11:07 left on the clock. After the Mustangs made it 14-12, Schupp netted a pair of goals within two minutes of one another and Darasz closed out the scoring with 12 ticks left to go.
Morrisville had a slight edge in shots in the game, 35-31. Hartwick had more ground balls, 30-26, with the Mustangs winning 22 draws to the Hawks' nine.
Darasz and Layton each recorded a team-high six ground balls for 'Wick. Goalkeeper
Ashley Jablonowski (Levittown, NY/Island Trees), who finished with 11 saves, added four ground balls and
Ashley Egerter (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) and
Mattie Coffey (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) each had three.
Morrisville was led by Courtney Cavellier who scored a team-high four goals to go along with game-highs of 11 draws and eight ground balls.
Hartwick next hosts St. Joseph's (LI) on Saturday beginning at 4 p.m.
