ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick (2-1) shut down St. Joseph's (1-3) for nearly 20 minutes in the second half while building a six-goal advantage and held off the Golden Eagles late for a 16-13 victory Saturday at Wright Stadium. St. Joe's scored four goals in a 2:25 span and cut its deficit to two with just over three minutes left in the game.
Minnie Schupp's (Menands, NY/Shaker) goal 1:08 later, however, stopped the run and put the game away.
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) led Hartwick with five goals. She also added an assist.
Hanna Layton (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) netted a trio of goals and she contributed three assists.
Jennifer Darasz (Gorham, ME/Gorham) scored a pair and added three assists.
Schupp and
Emma Knapp (Canandaigua, NY/Marcus Whitman) each tallied twice.
Hailey Pooler (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) had a goal and two helpers, and
Michaela McKernan (Branchville, NJ/High Point Regional) added a goal.
After two goals from each team to start the game, the Hawks rallied for four straight goals in just over five minutes to take a 6-2 lead. The Golden Eagles answered right back with four goals in an eight-minute span to tie the game with nine minutes left in the half. Hartwick closed the stanza out-scoring the visitors 3-1.
Following a St. Joe's goal which pulled it within one 18 seconds into the second half, the Hawks scored the next five goals for a 14-8 lead. Layton tallied three times in the run. Over the 10-minute span, Hartwick goalie
Carleigh Tarala (Tully, NY/Tully) made six saves and the Golden Eagles hit the post three times.
St. Joe's finally ended its drought with 10:08 remaining. Hartwick pushed the lead back to six at the 8:28 mark but the Golden Eagles stormed back with four straight tallies before Schupp closed out the day's scoring.
Tarala would finish the game with 11 saves for the Hawks. Darasz paced Hartwick in ground balls with seven.
Emma Kaplan (Danbury, CT/Danbury) recorded four and Schupp,
Mattie Coffey (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa), and
Katie Weaver (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) each registered three. Weaver also had a team-high three draws.
Ashley Egerter (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) caused a game-best three turnovers.
The Golden Eagles received five goals and an assist from Kristi Carroll. Nicole Stoppelli added three goals, four assists, and a game-high six draws. Diana Johnston scored three times and grabbed a game-high 10 draw controls.
Hartwick is back in action on Thursday, March 22 at home against Plymouth State beginning at 4 p.m.
