ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick women's lacrosse led 10-5 in the second half but visiting Plymouth State rallied for 12 of the final 13 goals to earn a 17-11 win Thursday evening at Wright Stadium. Both teams are now 2-2 on the season.
'Wick was led by
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) who scored five goals.
Hanna Layton (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) added a pair of scores and she dished out four assists.
Emma Knapp (Canandaigua, NY/Marcus Whitman) tallied twice with
Hailey Pooler (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) contributing a goal and two assists.
Minnie Schupp (Menands, NY/Shaker) scored a goal and
Jennifer Darasz (Gorham, ME/Gorham) added one assist.
The Panthers would hold a 46-19 edge in shots in the game, but 'Wick freshman keeper
Jennifer Paszko (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) would stop 17 shots in cage to keep the game close.
Neither team would lead by more than a goal through the midway point of the first half until consecutive tallies from Knapp and Werner handed the Hawks a 5-3 lead with 11:16 left. After a Panther tally, Pooler and Werner both scored to increase the Hawks' advantage to three, 7-4. Werner added a goal late in the stanza and 'Wick entered halftime up 8-5.
Werner netted her 19
th goal of the season to start the second half and Schupp tallied 1:21 later as 'Wick opened up a 10-5 edge. Plymouth responded with four goals in a 3:30 span to pull within one before Hartwick answered with a Layton goal with 18:18 remaining. Plymouth scored 36 seconds later marking the first of eight straight goals for the visitors the rest of the way as they pulled out the win.
Paszko, Schupp,
Katie Weaver (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), and
Cassie Durkin (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville Dewitt) each tied for a game-high with three ground balls for the Hawks. Darasz, Weaver, and Layton each grabbed three draws.
Mattie Coffey (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) caused a trio of Plymouth turnovers.
Ashley Egerter (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) added two caused turnovers.
The Panthers received four goals and an assist from Sam Fiore and two goals and four assists from Megan Tingley. Sam Sullivan and Veronyca Daniels each added three tallies and two helpers.
Hartwick begins Empire 8 Conference play at No. 23 St. John Fisher on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
