POTSDAM, NY – Trailing 5-1 at halftime, Hartwick scored seven consecutive goals in a 14:52 span of the second half and hung on for an 8-7 win at SUNY Potsdam in a game played at Maxcy Turf Field on Tuesday. Hartwick evens up its overall record at 3-3. The Bears fall to 3-4.
Hanna Layton (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) led the Hawks with three goals.
Jennifer Darasz (Gorham, ME/Gorham) scored twice and added an assist and
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) contributed two tallies. Werner's second of the day marked the 100
th goal in her career at Hartwick.
Hailey Pooler (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) scored a goal and registered a game-high four assists.
Potsdam would score the first two goals of the game and after Pooler tallied for 'Wick, the Bears would add three more for a 5-1 advantage. In the second half, Pooler dished out assists on the Hawks' first three goals. Darasz netted two with Layton also scoring and 'Wick trailed by one.
Layton scored to tie the game at 17:56 and she gave the Hawks their first lead of the game 57 seconds later. Werner scored two straight goals 1:03 apart and Hartwick led by a margin of 8-5 with 14:07 left on the clock.
The Bears tallied for the first time in over 20 minutes with 11:28 left, and they pulled within one at the 6:30 mark. The hosts fired two more shots as they looked for the tying goal. The first was wide of the target and the second, with just over three minutes left, was turned away by Hartwick keeper
Carleigh Tarala (Tully, NY/Tully). She finished the game with five saves in the final 46:17.
Ashley Jablonowski (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) started the game and made two stops.
Hartwick out-shot Potsdam 24-19 in the game, including a 15-7 margin in the second half. The Hawks had the edge in ground balls, 22-21, and the Bears had more draws, 9-8.
Emma Kaplan (Danbury, CT/Danbury) led the Hawks in ground balls with four. Darasz and
GinaMarie Wilson (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) had three apiece. Darasz would also lead her team in draw controls (3) and caused turnovers (3). Kaplan also had three caused turnovers. Pooler,
Emma Knapp (Canandaigua, NY/Marcus Whitman), and
Carly Baird (Watervliet, NY/Shaker) had two apiece.
Potsdam was paced by Alli Stark who scored three goals. Cayla O'Connor had the game-high in draws with seven.
Hartwick plays tomorrow at SUNY Canton. Game time is 4 p.m.
