CANTON, NY – Hartwick women's lacrosse used a six-goal run at the end of the first half and into the second to help secure a 13-11 victory over SUNY Canton (3-4) on Wednesday evening. The Hawks improve to 4-3 on the season. Senior
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) tied a career-high with seven goals for the Hawks.
Werner would score five times in the opening half. She would account for three Hawks' tallies in their six-goal spurt.
Hailey Pooler (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) added two goals and two assists.
Hanna Layton (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) dished out four assists and
GinaMarie Wilson (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) contributed a goal and an assist.
Minnie Schupp (Menands, NY/Shaker),
Taylor Manzelli (Watervliet, NY/Shaker), and
Ashley Jablonowski (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) also scored.
Jennifer Darasz (Gorham, ME/Gorham) recorded an assist.
Canton would register the first two goals of the game before the Hawks answered with four straight goals. Werner would net three of them. The Kangaroos would get the next two goals to tie the game at four before the two teams traded tallies. Pooler and Werner responded for 'Wick with consecutive goals to give the Hawks a 7-5 edge at the midway point of the half.
Canton would draw even once again with under 13 minutes to play in the half. Werner then netted a free-position goal to put the Hawks up to stay with 10:57 left.
Five straight goals in the first 12:10 of action in the second half put 'Wick in front, 13-7. The Roos scored four straight, including three in a 2:49 span, to cut their deficit to two with 6:06 left in the contest. Canton would record five more shots the rest of the way. One hit the crossbar and two were turned aside by keeper
Carleigh Tarala (Tully, NY/Tully) to help preserve the victory.
The Hawks were out-shot 43-19 in the contest but they were efficient on offense, scoring on 68% of their shots. The Roos had the edge in ground balls, 39-26. The Hawks won 16 of 26 draws on the day.
Tarala finished the second half with eight saves.
Jennifer Paszko (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) stopped five shots in the opening half.
Mattie Coffey (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) led the Hawks with six ground balls. She also tied for a team-best with three caused turnovers. Darasz had five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Layton recorded a game-high nine draw controls for the Hawks. Pooler added five.
Hartwick will host Alfred University in an Empire 8 Conference game on Friday, March 30. Game time is 4 p.m.
