Alfred Stops Men’s Lax Win Streak at Four

ALFRED, NY – Hartwick scored the game's first three goals but host Alfred scored 11 of the last 15 as the Saxons won an 11-7 decision on Saturday in an Empire 8 Conference tilt. The loss ends the Hawks' four-match winning streak and drops them to 4-2 and 1-1 in league play. Alfred improves to 6-4 and 2-0.
           
Brett Maguire (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) scored two goals and assisted on another for 'Wick. Mike Majchrzak (Plantsville, CT/Southington) added two goals and David Demand (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) chipped in a goal and an assist. Cordell Armstrong (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) and Wyatt Long (Hardwick, NJ/Blair Academy) also scored. Nick Couvaris (Seaford, NY/Seaford) registered an assist.
           
The Hawks got off to a great start with Armstrong, Long, and Maguire all tallying in the first 7:28 for a 3-0 advantage. AU would erase its deficit with three goals in a 3:55 span to even the match at three at the end of the first quarter.
           
Hartwick jumped in front early in the second quarter as Maguire scored after 48 seconds for a 4-3 edge. Alfred answered 2:25 later and took the lead at the 7:36 mark. Demand tied things up at 5-5 with a goal with 5:34 left in the half but the Saxons moved in front for good with 70 seconds left on the first-half clock.
           
AU got some breathing room with two goals in the third quarter for an 8-5 lead. Majchrzak scored consecutive goals 1:17 apart to cut the Hawks' deficit to one, 8-7, but the Saxons tallied with just over a minute left in the third and they added a pair of goals in the fourth to help secure the win.
           
Hartwick out-shot Alfred, 33-28. The Saxons had the edge over the Hawks in ground balls, 37-35, and face-offs won, 16-5.
           
Maguire, Eric Schweitzer (Babylon, NY/Babylon), and Garrison Wojtas (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) all tied for a team-high with four ground balls. David Bianculli (Charlton, MA/Shepard Hill Regional) and Tim Watson (Wrentham, MA/King Philip Regional) each had three. Schweitzer caused a team-best four Alfred turnovers. Wojtas caused three. C.J. Alesandrini (Schenectady, NY/Colonie) made eight saves in the cage.
           
AU received three goals each from Jake Lynch, Joe Fornataro, and Cale Donegan. The trio also combined for six assists. Garrette Briggs won 16 face-offs and recorded a game-high 11 ground balls for the Saxons. Drew Gardner made eight saves in goal.
           
Hartwick hosts Clarkson on Wednesday, April 4 at 4 p.m.
