ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick scored the game's first 12 goals over four quarters and held visiting Elmira scoreless for the opening 53 minutes in a 14-1 rout Saturday at Wright Stadium. The day served as Hartwick Men's Lacrosse Senior Day with the honoring of
David Bianculli (Charlton, MA/Shepard Hill Regional),
Brett Maguire (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson),
Tanner Patterson (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow), and
Eric Schweitzer (Babylon, NY/Babylon) prior to the opening face-off.
The Hawks improve to 8-3 on the season and 4-2 in the Empire 8. They pull into a three-way tie with Alfred and St. John Fisher for second place in the league standings and can clinch a berth in their second straight Empire 8 Tournament with a victory at Nazareth in their regular season finale next Saturday.
Hartwick dominated Elmira in both shots, 44-15, and ground balls, 42-31. The Hawks also had the edge in face-offs, 10-8.
Seven different Hawks registered goals in the first quarter as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead after one quarter. They tacked on another three goals in the second quarter for a 10-0 lead at halftime and added one goal in the third quarter. Elmira finally got on the scoreboard at 6:53 of the fourth quarter before 'Wick added two more scores for the final 14-1 score line.
Cordell Armstrong (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) led Hartwick with two goals and an assist.
David Demand (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango),
Chris VanDemark (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post), and
Zach Borges (East Rockaway, NY/Lynbrook) each added a pair of tallies. Maguire scored a goal and dished out two assists. Schweitzer,
Tim Watson (Wrentham, MA/King Philip Regional), and
Mike Majchrzak (Plantsville, CT/Southington) contributed a goal and an assist each.
Bianculli and
Wyatt Long (Hardwick, NJ/Blair Academy) each scored goals for the Hawks.
Nick Couvaris (Seaford, NY/Seaford) added two assists with
Justin Curreri (Miller Place, NY/Rocky Point) registering one.
Garrison Wojtas (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) grabbed a game-high seven ground balls for 'Wick.
Derek Chandler (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) contributed six ground balls and two caused turnovers. Bianculli added five ground balls and he won 10-of-16 face-offs. Patterson finished with four ground balls and one caused turnover.
Matthew Puzo (Apalachin, NY/Vestal) caused a trio of Soaring Eagle miscues. Demand and Couvaris each had two.
C.J. Alesandrini (Schenectady, NY/Colonie) made four saves in the first half.
Connor O'Brien (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) played the third quarter and stopped two shots.
Christian Olsen (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) finished out the game with two saves in the fourth period.
Hartwick next plays on Tuesday, April 24 at Hamilton beginning at 6 p.m.
