ELMIRA, NY –
Jennifer Darasz (Gorham, ME/Gorham) and
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) combined for 10 goals as Hartwick's women's lacrosse team beat Elmira College 20-9 Tuesday at Campus Field in Elmira, NY. The Hawks are now 8-5 overall and 4-3 in Empire 8. The Soaring Eagles slip to 3-11 and 1-6 in league play.
Darasz finished the game with five first-half goals and an assist. Werner added five goals to bring her season total to 61. The 61 tallies is tied for eighth in season goals in the program's history.
Hanna Layton (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) added three goals and three assists.
Emma Knapp (Canandaigua, NY/Marcus Whitman) also collected three goals.
Hailey Pooler (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) contributed a goal and a game-high four assists.
GinaMarie Wilson (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) scored twice and
Taylor Manzelli (Watervliet, NY/Shaker) tallied once.
After the Hawks spotted the Soaring Eagles a 2-0 lead after 2:59 of action, Hartwick scored five straight goals in less than six minutes and they never trailed again. Elmira was able to trim the gap to three, 7-4, with just over eight minutes left in the half only to have the Hawks come right back with four straight goals to head into the break up 11-4.
In the second half, the Hawks never led by less than seven goals. They held at least a 10-goal margin for the final 18 and a half minutes.
Hartwick would score on 20 of its 36 shots on the day. Elmira found the net on only nine of its 30 shots. The Hawks had more ground balls (31-25) and draws (16-15) than the Soaring Eagles.
Knapp would register a game-high eight draw controls for 'Wick. She added four ground balls. Goalie
Jennifer Paszko (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury), who stopped five shots in the first half, finished with a team-high five ground balls. Werner and
Mattie Coffey (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) each had four. Wilson,
Katie Weaver (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), and
Cassie Durkin (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville Dewitt) all had three. Durkin also had an assist and a team-high two caused turnovers.
Carleigh Tarala (Tully, NY/Tully) played in net for the Hawks in the second half. She finished with five saves.
Hartwick wraps up the regular season on Saturday, April 28 against Nazareth at 1 p.m. The Code Blue game also will serve as the Hawks' Senior Day. 'Wick is still in the hunt for an Empire 8 playoff berth but they must beat the Golden Flyers to have a chance.
